People doing the stuff to there cars themselves deserve a shit load more respect than the people throwing money at other people to do the work for them

I don't appreciate cars built by garages anywhere near as much as i appreciate the man on his drive working in the shit weather we get.

I've spent a fair bit on mine, way above the £500 mark, but I've done it all myself. I can look at the car and think I'VE done that. And that is a great feeling! Especially when people give you good comments about it. If id have given it to someone else to do, it just wouldn't be the same.

Maybe not taken the piss but looking through some threads it seems that unless your car has certain things done to it, its not liked.

There are a few exeptions dont get me wrong, like yours nath, i like the fact you went a different route from everyone else and pulled it off perfectly.

I'm 17 years old in december so I'm on a kinda budget but I'm at about the £400 £500 mark now its amazing how quick it al adds up anyway few pics

1st pic colour coded bumpers and boot bar, new exhaust, tinted rear lights, soon to be getting the GT rears :)

2nd pic, bit of dollar and time spent on tidying up the engine bay :)

got some new wheels of a mate, gunna strip them down soon and give them a better spray job, and also lowerd 40mm but getting a new ta technix 60mm 40mm kit soon rears ajustable :) so about 60 60 or 60 70 soon :)

I don't get it when people label "DIY" as shoddy, how is paying someone else to do it any more "proper" than doing it yourself? Okay fair enough, I would never attempt a respray or intricate bodywork modifications myself, some things are worth paying an expert to do, but everything else is fair game imo, it's just nuts and bolts at the end of the day.

Maybe it's just the way my mind works, but modifying to me is about adding a personal touch. Half of the fun is doing it yourself.

Spent just about £600 on mine excluding buying it, that includes lowered, wheels (got lucky they were way under priced), Abd engine conversion, modded spi unit, Cheap 2nd hand exhaust with decat and non standard back box, corrado leather front seats ( again got them very cheap compared to what some people sell them for), and a few other lil bits.

Doesnt look bad at all for the money iv spent, some people just throw money at cars and they still look crap.

I actually disagree with Sean, because I actually like some of these budget builds, but the way you said it was just treasure.

There are certain things that HAVE to be done for a car to be liked at all. These are the basics, such as having well fitting wheels and having a killer stance, which usually means being low.

If you don't agree, then your in the tiny minority for the VW Scene as a whole which is why there are loads of cars around which to you might look the same. It's because most people have the same views of what's "right" and "wrong" in terms of modifying a Dub!

Yes and good stance and wheels do look nice, but you have to admit in the vw scene there is alot of the same, how many people do original things with engine, interior and bodywork. Alot of them fit the most common engine or engine mods, Alot are so low they can't get over speed humps. Thats why I think budget builds are better in a way they all look different.

as for the person who said they all look crap, thats just stupid talk, got to think about other people's curcumstances other than your own, just because you might be able to spend a fortune on them dosnt mean to say everyone else car, I'm sure everyone would love theres to look amazing but money is an object, example, I'm on £30 a week, imo i think I've dont pretty well to get mine look how it is, i think they all look good for the budget. :)

tbh if someone wants to fritter away thousands on a polo thats up to them (theres worse things you could spend money on). I could have done the same, but decided to buy a house instead.

I cant say i have any interest in cheque-book cars, they lack character, they just look clinical and flash. With a lot of diy built cars you can really see the effort that has gone into them (that doesnt just apply to low budget builds, theres been pleanty of more expensive builds that have been done) ok they may not be perfect, but i think that adds to the character of them.

I've owned my g40 for 5 maybe 6 years and the only things i have payed someone else to do have been front wheel bearings, bespoke exhuast system and mots. everything else, from respraying the c pillars, rebuilding the charger, lowering it, servicing it, taking pics of it, I've done myself. The reason has never been down to cash. I could afford to pay someone to do all the bits I've done, but its my hobby. i enjoy hunting on ebay for the bargains, i love ripping the car apart in order to fix something, thats 90% of the fun for me. Once I've done a car to the spec i want it, 9/10 it gets sold on, then i buy another shitter to do up.

A lot of these 'show cars' appear to me to be nothing more than a fashion item, which often get broke for parts once the owners bored of them.

As I've said before, I dont believe in cheque book cars either. Dropping your car and keys off at a garage and picking it up after spending a lot of money will never give you the self satisfaction that doing something yourself would. Plus whats the point, you dont learn anything and thats half the fun

I could afford to drop my car into a garage and pay a shed load, but thats not what its about for me.

1. I dont believe in spending 10 grand on a car you paid 2 grand for

2. For £500, I can do a home respray, get a bargain interior and lower/new wheels. Completely changing the look of my car

3. Doing it yourself is what car modification is all about, that self satisfaction is why we all love cars

Dont get me wrong, you will never get the show car finish (or it is very unlikely) doing it yourself, but thats not what its always about. Most of us drive our cars daily so to try and maintain that sort of standard is pretty unrealistic and we cant afford our cars being off the road in a garage for a certain amount of time.

i dont get the hate behind 'chequebook' cars. if i like a car i like a car. i don't ask the owner at a show if he did all the work or not, and if he says no a bodyshop did, then i walk away in discust. its still the owners ideas that have gone into the car. but because the owner cant do loads of bodywork himself or a full retrim, he shouldnt be allowed to see his ideas come to life? some people don't have the time or expertise to do it themselves. its not like they drop the car off somewhere and say 'make it cool please i'll pay whatever it costs' they know exactly what they want. Unlike loads of people on here... 'should i paint my wheels pink? purple? gold? red? should i buy a bonnet bra? which wheels will look the best?'

yes, i do appreciate a car thats been completely built by the owner. i'v not had a company do anything on my car for me. its all been done myself with a few mates, so i know that feeling when you stand back and it all works. but if i couldn't do something then i'd give it to a company that can if needs be.

so as for chequebook cars. money can't buy you taste.

hate is a strong word. a few people have said they arent that interested in cheque-book cars, just like there have been some people who have said they dont like budget builds. if anything the budget build owners have worded things in a far less obtuse manner

next installment - spent £500 on new wheels and wound the coilovers down notched the chassis and fitted engine spacers to raise the sump

I offen like 'cheque book cars', dont get me wrong some people do take it too far but I offen like them. But personally I have far more respect for the owner if all the work has been done by them. I read built threads looking at what some people have done to there cars and wish i had the technical ability to do half the stuff these people are doing, the result is that i admire that car more than one where some one has given it some else for them to do.

I dont hate chequebook cars at all. Professionally done modifications are always done to a high standard and obviously I like that. I think its more the fact that I respect a car that has been home built more, obviously some stuff you cant do yourself and on those occassions its definatly better to get it done by a professional.

It might be the lazyness thats associated with it that I dont respect as much, as some stuff people have done they could do themselves but they would rather pay through the nose to get it done by a professional as they cant be bothered. Waste of money that they could have used on getting a professional to do something else they want?

I agree with you on the colour thing though Nath, people should go with what they like as opposed to asking peoples opinions on stuff. No point asking everybody there opinions just so u fit in..

however I did make a swatch for my car on photoshop in different colours when I was deciding what colour to paint it, and then asked peoples opinions. I was genuinly unsure as to which way i wanted to go with it though so reflections from people who know there cars was helpful.
