Redrill wheels from 5x98 to 5x100

Featured Replies

I have a set of 5x98 wheels for my mk7 polo but the hubs are 5x100. Could I simply drill an extra mm out of the wheel holes to make the fit. Tried searching and found someone say ....

The difference between 5 x 98 and 5 x 100 is only 1mm off the inside edge of each hole!!

As Rune suggests, so long as the centreing ring is the correct size, this will ensure the wheel sits in the middle.

All you need to do is take a file or a dremmel to each hole and remove a millimetre. Also adjust the taper or cone to match.

It's such a small amount.

You will find the wheels will fit without, but when you put the nuts on, you'll put a stress on the stud as the cone centres itself in the wheel. Not good.

A minor adjustment to the wheel and you're sorted.

Of course, if funds and a local engineering shop allow, have them do it more accurately, but it'll need doing on a mill rather than using a drill.

Is this correct?

Thanks

if its only 2 mil difference could you not use wobble bolts?

^ What he said...everyone else does

apparantly to get jap wheels (5x114.2) to fit vw (5x112) the just drill the bolt holes out 2mm... it was in pvw not so long ago...

They're 5x98 not 5x114.2 :disgust: ...or did you miss that bit

Wobble bolt it. Drilling out wheels is a pain in the cock.

Sure is, Worth it though with the right tools/Machinery if the wheels are beyond wobble bolt capability.

If they were beyond wobble capabilities I'd just go with adapters.

So I'm better off paying 45.00 for wobble bolts then getting a drill peice 1 or 2pm bigger and trying to enlargen the whole to 5x100 ?

IMO.

Trouble with machining the existing holes is that the taper has to be spot-on. You'll end up with an egg shaped taper, and give yourself all manner of problems doing it properly.

Simple solution is to use collared bolts,as has been said.
