Polo Coupe S

Featured Replies

Bit of a feeler really as I haven't had it long. This is the second time of owning this car and I enjoy it a lot but feel I need to start saving money and stop modifying cars! Looking for a swap or p/x for something standard and reliable. ANYTHING CONSIDERED

Description nabbed from previous owner (thanks Goose :p)

Year/Reg: 1987 D35 KYB

Mileage: 120k odd(will double check) Will go up slightly as I'm still using it

MOT: 12 months 8th Dec 2011

Tax: June 2011

Good Bits -

Exterior/Chassis:

Lowered 80/60mm on PhilJ coil/damper kit. Just had new top mounts put on, tracking was done aswell.

Genuine BBS Mahles 13x6 wrapped in 165/55's. The tyres were new less than 2000 miles ago, wheels had a quick refurb before the tyres were put on. New bolts aswell.

Rear wheels spaced out 10mm each side using high quality blocks between the stub axle and rear beam. Alot better than the normal spacers, easier to change wheels and does not wear out wheel bearings.

Rear wheel bearings replaced less than 3000 miles ago.

Rear drum cylinders replaced less than 3000 miles ago. All brake fluid was also replaced with new Dot4

Rear wiper has been removed, it will all come with it though.

Aero wipers

Everything else exterior wise is standard.

Engine/Exhaust:

GT head/cam and block. Block was hammerited black before it was put in.

GK inlet manifold. Again not the easiest things to get.

Webber DMTL carb, manual choke. Has a genuine VW choke cable to fits in with the dash perfectly.

Still running all the original mk2 ignition system.

Facet electric fuel pump that has been hidden away in the skuttle tray.

8P gearbox, clutch was still good when engine was changed over.

Exhaust has had the middle box removed and just has a back box for clearance. Barely ever touches the ground, sounds alright aswell.

The cambelt and water pump on the GT were changed shortly before I got it, I've had it barely anytime. Not totally sure on the mileage of it but it runs very sweet, doesn't use any oil. Oil and filter were also replaced less than 1500 miles ago.

Haven't had it rolling roaded but feels like a good powerful engine with the webber and GK inlet. Loves to rev and will happily go right to the end of the rev counter. My original plan was to add a 4 branch manifold and GT gearbox which would would finish it off perfectly and be pretty quick.

I also have a windscreen washer fluid bottle that goes in the boot so the one in the front can be removed to give a cleaner bay. I haven't had a chance to fit it yet but will come with the car.

Interior:

Recaro front seats, not sure what they were originally from. The original seat runner have been welded on but sit a lot lot lower than standard. Gives IMO a nice driving position. Unfortunately the cloth on the seats isn't great condition, but the foam is near perfect which is the more important bit so ideal for a quick and easy retrim.

Mountney leather steering wheel and boss. Very small, great fun round twisty roads.

Leather gearknob

Has some Sony Xplod component speakers in the rear parcel, previous owner did this. All original speakers are still in the car though.

Not so good bits -

The worst bit is basically parts of the bodywork, being the passengers front wing, which ideally needs replacing as it has a rust hole in the bottom corner. The bonnet has obviously had the passenger corner resprayed but not blended in very well. Areas of primer as beginning to show in the roof, obviously from being previously over T-cutted! There is also a scratch in the roof that has gone down to primer.

A couple of dents and a couple of minor surface rust spots, which are to be expected of a car this old.

The fuel gauge and temp gauge don't seem to work properly. The temperature gauge is intermittent, the engine never over heats so isn't too much of a concern. And the fuel gauge will only read just above half way when the tank is full. I haven't really bothered looking into this problem and just got used to it.

The alternator appears to be making a noise as if the bearings are slowly on their way out. Still charges the battery up fine though.

Overall its a great car that gets lots of looks and compliments. Lots of fun to drive, and mechanically pretty good. The only thing that really lets it down are the areas of the bodywork mentioned, which could easily be fixed with a trip to the scrappies.

All the spares I've got, will also be thrown in.
