Right fitted new speedo the other day to the polo, as it randomly stopped working. I have checked the cable, still moves round even when pressure on it. I have checked all my fuses etc.

What else could it be, could there be a dodgy wire somewhere, and how do i find this out.

My rev counter digi clock etc are all still working as should.

Need some help please.

It's a long while since I worked on a Mk2, but it sounds as if you are describing a mechanical speedometer here, if this is the case, fuses and wires don't come into the equation. You say that the cable turns, even if you put some load on it, that being the case, does the cable enter far enough into the speedo head? Is the cable tight once you have tightened the nut (by the way, this should only be 'finger-tight.) You could also try a square object (matchstick?) in the speedo head and give it a spin to be sure that the needle moves.

I was told that the speedo still uses an electrical current, and all this has stemd from a stereo wire shorting. it blew the fuse for my digi clock aswell. Yeah the cable is fully in. The speedo does work i tested it before put it in.

If you put a small flat bladed screwdriver in the hole on the speedo for the cable and turn, does the needle rise? I've just grabbed a spare speedo from the garage and mine certainly does. I've also connected a speedo cable to it and put the other end in a drill and I can drive the speedo from the drill. There's either a problem with the speedo drive or you have a broken speedo it seems.. Have you tried these things?

Yeah when i got the speedo, i checked it by turning it but only with a screw driver. I'm just gonna have to have a play about when its dry tomoz. Bluddy nightmare, not feeling driving around with no speedo.

Hmm, just one last thought - is the speedo cable pushing fully in to the back of the speedo (is it the one with the clip?) maybe the cable's duff...

I've checked the cable, the cable turns and turns when i put some pressure on it when moving, so that is working as should. Its fully clipped in on the back, i undone the bit that connected to gear box so i had a better view and its fully in.

I'd be tempted to remove the gearbox end of the cable and put your drill on the cable to prove the speedo and cable is okay then. Can't think of anything else you can do after that...

yeah think I'm just gonna have to play around with it all, and hopefully get it working. Its all started from the stereo shorting as it blew my clock fuse and the speedo hasnt worked since. but all fuses are good etc. Its doing my head in.

Long shot. Long time since I did any work on a mark 2, but, you say you changed the clocks. Could there have been a small adaptor on the end of the speedo cable which is now missing or stuck in the back of the old speedo? I don't have a mark 2 Haynes manual any more and my version of the computer manual doesn't go back far enough to check. Just something has stuck in my mind from years ago.

Both the end of the speedo's are the same bud. I dont know what it could be as if i spin the speedo with somelike a screw driver in it, the needle moves, and thats on my new one and old one. So it cannot be the speedo.

Well it seems the plug is engaging,but the cable isn't.

As said above,i recon you should attach it at the dash end,then remove it from the gearbox and have a feel there to locate it and try driving the speedo by turning the cable. There's a pin in the fitting at the gearbox end to keep parts together,could be missing or could be wear,either way id be doing that.

Theres usually a white square, pin that locks into the back of the clocks. Could this have snapped halfway along, giving the impression its still there, when it's not actually engaging in the back of the speedo drive?
