I recently received an own number plate as a gift.

I know it sounds really ungrateful but I really dont want to put it on my car, but the person who bought it for me has already registered it to my car!

The thing is, I'm currently a learner driver and a not very experienced one at that. The idea of drawing more attention to myself using a plate is just daunting.

I really dont know what to do. Do I have to put this new plate on or can I leave my old one on? If I have to put it on, how much does it cost to re-register the old one? What can I do to solve this? Its such a tricky situation : (.

I'm pretty sure you cant use the old plate if the new one is already registered to the car. You should be able to revert back to it, and then keep the private one on retention to keep or sell or whatever.

When I say attention, I just picture the scene of me, as a learner driver, pulling off at the traffic lights, stalling twice. And the person behind me who has already been looking at my plate and just thinks; ".... nobhead".

Personally I dont like private plates anyway, there just there for people to look at and thats exactly what I dont want. It would be fine if I was an awesome driver and wanted to look cool, but I'm really not.

unless its, 1m th3 m05t 4w350m3 dr1v37 3v3r, which doesnt fit on a plate iirc, then you wouldnt have anything to worry about. someone stalling twice is funny wether they have a personalised plate or not (btw, I've stalled 9 times in the past two days in my new car)

I bet there aint a member on here dude who hasn't stalled there car during the learning period so dont let that bother you. Unless its a take piss number plate I can't see how it can had to any embarrassment.

Most private plates are exactly that. Unless you know the person they dont make sense. Unless its a properly private plate like the one above.

Thanks for all the help. But I dunno, its just one of those things. You get it in your head that its a bad idea and thats that.

And thats another thing thats a big problem. Most people would LOVE a custom plate and the fact that I dont just makes me sound like the most ungrateful prick. They really arent my thing, I always try to be a subtle person, especially with things I'm not very good with and then this... ugh I dunno.

I guess so, but if its a simple case of I can just leave the old plate on then Id rather just do that. I dunno what the laws behind it are though.

Best bet is to ring the DVLA and see what they say.

They will tell you whats what and what all your options are :)

you can contact dvla and put the private plate back on retention and get the original plate back on the car meaning when you want to use the private plate you just have to re register it which will cost you another transfer fee x2 just out of interest most driving instructors have private plates today and I'm sure people stall on lessons i did all the time

Unfortunately I just got my car, its a 2002 polo I got pretty cheap from a family friend. The whole reason I got it was to have something extra I could learn in.

Unless the plate says something stupid it sounds like you are being a bit of a fanny to be honest.......no offence.

Picture the scene, learner driver with a personal plate...... Ooooo that idiot with the personal plate GRRRR . No one will give a shit about your plate or even notice it. Most people just overtake/drive around learners no matter what their plate/car/driving style is like.

Unless the plate makes you look like a TW4T then i really don't see your issue. Don't waste your money getting it transferred. Man up, stop babbing your pants at traffic lights wondering what the no one is thinking in the car behind you and concentrate on your driving.

My 16v has some issues and sometimes stalls , although better now when I'm out in that it will cut out at light :L Il just start it backup and boot it

Who gives a shit. Everyone thinks learners are nobheads anyway, so having a private plate doesn't really matter!!!

Look guys.. this guy doesn't the plate on his car. I know if the same thing happened to me then I wouldn't be happy.

I'm guessing the person who got you the plate is the person who is the registered keeper of the car as I don't know how they would have already registered it if they weren't. The problem you are going to have is that you might not beable to put it back to the old plate of you are not the registered keeper.

Speak to the DVLA and see what they say.. they normally are useless but you never know. I believe the fee is £85 or something like that.

To be honest unless its something amazing like 'M1NGE' ( on a blacked out range rover sport!) no-one will either know or care. Private plates are probably the biggest waste of money possible.
