Ok, so I'm planning on getting my 6n2 boot smoothed. This includes having VW badge and boot handle deleted.

So if this is done, I obviously need to gain access to the boot somehow. So what choices would I have. All I'm aware of is the boot poppers? How easy are they to get hold of and how easy/hard are they to install.

Easy to install, just wire it up to the rear washer jet if you have no wiper.

I have a TOAD Cat 1 alarm so mine is also wired to the fob on that.

My solenoid cost me £15.00 from eBay and was fitted in September 2009. Hasn't missed a beat since then.

just out boot popper into ebay and you will get hundreds of hits

Solenoid is the "proper" term for a boot popper.

They can be used on doors too, and most new cars have a solenoid in the petrol flap which pops them open from a button inside the car :)

Obviously I used none of the wiring or the switches, just the bracket and the solenoid and the metal rod which you hook onto the latch which the solenoid pulls on.

No, when you smooth the boot, it will no longer have a lock on it, but it won't matter because there is no handle so you can't get in without popping it open.

Boot will not pop out.

I had a specific button programmed into my Toad fob which specifically controlled that.

To open the boot you'll have to push the rear washer stalk, this will open the boot and is the easiest way to wire it up as the wiring is already there.

My smooth boot was £350.

Reason it was a bit more was because I had the inside sprayed up as it wasn't my original boot lid, so it was a different colour.

I also had the rear window removed and a new one fitted which is the best way to smooth a boot. Any decent bodyshop will remove the rear glass.

It is fairly straight forward to do, although I didn't do it. My alarm guy did it for me. Can get a pic of it if required but not until Monday because car is away at the trimmers having a new dash fitted. But you won't need the pic till then because it will take a few days for the solenoid to arrive from eBay.

No that is smoothing, any form of removing stuff to make it, well, smoother is smoothing.

That's what I had done, rear badge and handle, but the bodyshop took the rear window out for spraying as it's the only way to do it 'properly' then they put a new one in afterwards.

That make sense now?

Didn't you have any problems with that solenoid? As I have got the same one and when I start the car and it's on low revs, the boot lid gets vibrations which makes a lot of noise to the solenoid. I mean the magnesium inside the motor vibrates and bangs on the metal which makes really lound noise and is more than annoying. I tried to tighten the wire, but it's still the same. Did you have that problem? And if so, how did you overcome it ?

Ok great going to go to my local bodyshop tommrow.

I know you have tahhit but I'm too busy ATM to be faffing about with couriers etc. If you were more local I would.

I don't have that problem at all mate.

You could try putting a bit of audio sound deadening inbetween the solenoid and the metal of the bootlid so they aren't clanging against each other.

I meant that the magnesium is banging inside the motor, not on the boot lid. If I pull the wire by hand, as much as I can - the noise is gone. I tried so many times, but if tighten it too much, then it wont shut.

the reason i use ford poppers is you don't get any trouble like you do the ebay ones

I'm not sure mate, if it's only when you start up then it should be fine, I get a couple of rattles here and there from audio but is fine once started up.

Is it really that much of a problem? Maybe buy another solenoid for the sake of £15.00? Or see if someone else local has one you could check.

all good for you then but i fit poppers all the time and had nothing but trouble with cheap ebay ones, i always just go scrappys now and get poppers out of older fords, never had a problem with one yet

Well that's good, but you can't just say to people that they have problems because they came from eBay.

Yeah I agree, the cheap ones will be shit.

Which is why I recommended the £15.00 heavy duty one, which is obviously still cheap in comparison to a OEM Ford one but it does the trick if fitted correctly.
