cambelt snapped

Featured Replies

Drivin ma car last night and the car basically felt like it just cut out so I pulled over, went to start it and it sounded like there wasn't any compression! So I looked under the black cover and saw that the cambelt was snapped! Its a 1.4 16v 6n... All I want to know is will I have definately fucked at least 8valves? A mate of mine seemed to think that I may have got away with it as there was no loud banging noises coming from the engine when I attempted to restart the engine! The only thing I can really do is put a new cambelt and see if it turns over by hand or is that a waste of time! Steve

Take the head off and have a look to see what is damaged.

I would rather than just wanging a new cabelt on and hoping for the best.

You could've bent 8 valves, could be more than that! As has been said above, whack the head off and inspect it.

impossible to say if it'll have bent any or not, any answer would be a total guess but you'll need to be very lucky to not have bent any. You can certainly put a new belt on and then carefully turn the engine over by hand, stopping if it becomes too tight at any point, if you've got away with it then you can attempt to start it after this. Whatever you do dont just whip a belt on it and try to start it without testing by hand first though.

I'd say atleast 8 valves perhaps...but more than likely just a couple because once one breaks...it'll jam and the rest will end up bending a little and scoring the piston crowns.

Best to get the rocker cover off, change the belt and/or remove the engine completely...or take the head off for inspection.

You'll need some new headbolts and a headgasket but atleast you can be sure.

sorry to hear about it mate...i know the feeling!

your belt snapped and then your tried to restart the engine?

its going to be fubarred, I've broken a few with cambelt failures, but none have come off completely, just lost tension and I've bent between 4 and 12 valves!

as said, whip the head off

I've had an idle problem recently so when I dip the clutch it would sometimes cut out so I thought it had just done that... So I tried to start it... Noticed something was wrong so looked unda the bonnett and there was my snapped belt! Gna be takin the head off friday!

personally i would just chuck a belt on and see what it run's like if it runs at all, if when the belt snapped you done damage what more damage are you gonna do ? on the other hand if when the belt snapped and it didn't do any damage and you then take the head off your then left paying for a new head gasket new head bolts etc etc for no reason!!! how fast you were travelling can sometimes be an issue i have known cambelts go at 90 and bend 2-4 valves i have also known cambelts to go at 25-30mph and just kiss the valves doing no damage it's a lottery but putting a belt on and trying it before you take the head off imo would be the first thing to do

of course it can cause more damage..

A bent valve isnt going to be doing any favours when it fires up.

if its that badly bent then it won't fire up it will just keep turning over and over with no compression coz the valve - valves will be stuck open where they're bent if they're bent so little that they still open and close then it is possible that the guides haven't taken to much of a beating and it is possible for valves like this to straighten themselves but without trying who's to know

Valves won't straighten themselves. Ever.

Also, you run the risk of demolishing a valve guide, Taking a chuck out of a piston crown, or breaking a seat.

Do it properly dude.

yeah and if it's turning over the piston is smashing into the valve on each rotation. The biggest mess I've ever seen a picture of that this has made is the valve head snapped off and then embedded sideways into the piston crown.

I'd chuck a belt on but turn it over by hand a couple of times to make sure nothing is coming into contact with anything else before going anywhere near the ignition key.

I guess that means no compression, I'd take the head off.
