I have a 2000 Polo GTI (6N2) that I love too much to get rid of. The gearbox and clutch are in their last bits of life, does anybody know of a good, quick and CHEAP place to get this sorted? Any help would be great....

Erm.. Polo GTi and gearbox replacements/repairs don't come cheap.

What is actually wrong with the car and how do you know it's the gearbox?

i think u'll b lookin at best part of 600 quid for a good box and changing them

Cheers guys, do you know anyone/where who deals with this? And I know its the gearbox because it is whining and feels "crunchy" when putting into gears...

Take a look on ebay for a GTI breaking or on here...buy the box...or have yours reconditioned by a specialist gearbox company.

I'm pretty sure you can buy a recon box on ebay for less than £600 but i would reccomend you take your car to a garage first for them to diagnose if its just the clutch causing the problem.

a simple clutch kit change will cost approx £130.

make sure u buy a gearbox with a guarantee, there r black painted recon one's on ebay with 1yr warranty or there r used one's the best thing to have it fitted by the garage who sell it (plenty of speicalists about who supply & fit) if u dont make sure you are own garage is vat registered as most of the used boxes or even recon one's come with terms and conditions :shock: that they ave to b fitted by a proper garage

dont always go with the cheapest as well, average price for you are clutch/ box is around 600 quid anyone sayin that they can do it for 1/2 that is most likely sellin u a dude and you are only ave to spend the same if not more in a few months time

to be honest, i'd be tempted to get your gearbox reconditioned instead of buying one of them ebay ones.

That way you know exactly whats been changed on it and know the history of the box! and dont have to fuck about sending your old one to them.

everybody jumping to the conclusion that he needs a new or recon box he hasn't even stated what's wrong with it or what problems he's having with it could be something simple like it needs some oil !!??

PO1O what are the faults your experiencing mate ? Mr P did ask you but it seems you never replied on the forum give us more info and we can give you more advice

its ALWAYS best to fear the worst them if it turns out not that u've got a result, no point makin him think its a small issue then he gets hit with a gearbox replacement requirement, when he thought it'll cost a few quid to sort out

I am about 95% sure that it is the box that needs replacing..... and that is not just my opinion, the MOT garage said so as well plus a few "car freak" mates of mine. Basically the box wines in 3rd 4th and 5th, this used to only be an issue in 4th and 5th but now 3rd is noisy. Also the box is started to feel quite rough to get into certain gears as in quite clonky.... the box is also very noisy when I release all pressure from the acceleration pedal.... again is a winey and grindy noise... not very nice at all!

Quick one... does the 2000 model 6n2 gti gearbox go straight in the 2001 model ?

Same 085 series on all 6N2 GTi's

Can you see any wear in the gear change cable bush ?
