You will give in to the Swedish!!

I am into that!

thats class

1st ever car i drove was a 240 GL estate

I know its not a convertible, but Volvo S40s are unbelievable value for money! Heated and electric everything, genuinely bulletproof engines, nice styling...

My bro had one and I can honestly say that they've gotta be one of the most reliable cars around. They'll sail past 200,000 miles and not give any hint of stopping. The only bad thing about them is that the steering is far too light, but then again thats a good thing for women

You can get a 10 year old S40 for around £600-£1000, miles better value then most of the other shit of the same age and newer!

No offence meant here, but owner satisfaction surveys suggest not everyone is as happy with their S40s as your brother was!

O really? Maybe thats why they're so cheap then! I drove it round for a good few months and I thought it was great! I realise it has a bit of a boring reputation but who the fuck cares what Joe public think?

I've got the general Volvo bug big time now...

That red 240 isn't low enough. And those wheels need to be matt black.

I'd like to throw a suggestion into the mix - Honda Civic?

Yes it has well known perceptions of being linked to our ethnic friends.

Yes it isn't a cool looking car.

Yes the mrs won't feel like she's driving a 330ci...

...but it's reliable (bulletproof actually, renound), good on fuel, mine cost £1,100, it's got four doors, a decent sized boot... and comes standard with the infamous B18, same as a Teg DC2.

Just a suggestion

Fair enough. A Saxo VTS weighs roughly the same as a basic MX-5, and I'm pretty confident that standard vs standard the Saxo would be a better car round a track. For one, it's considerably quicker than a 1.8 MX-5, even with a "worse" power to weight ratio. As standard MX-5s are all over the place, they may well be nicely balanced but they don't grip very hard. Get in a Saxo with VTR/VTS spec suspension components that are in good nick and it really is sublime what you can do with it. Better balanced than a 205 GTI so ever so slightly less tail happy, but more than enough to tuck the car back in no matter how wide you start going (unless you are a retard lol)

Start modifying things and I think the gap would get even bigger. The whole time that a small front drive car can put the power down, personally I believe it's going to be better than rear drive. Start adding more power and weight into it, and rear drive shows it's advantages.

Just as an example, a VTS has a 50 bhp disadvantage to a Clio 172/182 with little weight difference, but is no slower round your average twisty track. They are far faster than people give them credit for.

Totally agree with Tobyk by the way, just for the record, VTS/GTi owners will know this, they are MUCH quicker than you would EVER imagine, have you guys never seen a VTS keeping up with big (ish) power cars? I have, they're the little chav car that everybody loves to hate, because they handle like go karts and they are a very decent buy at approx £1,000. The 120bhp figure doesn't make it sound immense, but they have something else you can't describe really, total wolf in sheeps clothing.

Anyway, back on topic...

What kind of missus do you have to not want to drive a modern BMW or an Audi, such as a 1 series 5 door or a Sportback, they're two of the best options.

he probably has one that isn't a image obsessed self richeous prick like most modern BMW/Audi drivers.

As far as the car is concerned.......

Unlikely for Mikey considering the smallest lump is a 3.6 6 pot!

I dont think the XJS is quite what she has in mind, but i wouldn't mind finding out what twelve carbs on the 6.0 V12 version would sound like..

MGF

^^

Only issue is the seat space - we have a baby on the way,and two teenage kids. We wouldn't be seen dead in a people carrier or 4x4 we're not paranoid sheep. But we do actually need to fit in the thing, and these cabs tend to be four seaters.

She likes Peugeots but I'm also looking at E30 cabs, dunno what else though? Anyone wanna give me some inspiration and ideas? I've never looked into cabs before.

XJS - top gear did a review, James May reckons one of the most electrically backwards cars ever produced lol :-/

i did see it, but sometimes the best purchases in life are the ones where you dont put much thought into it :p

Or the most regrettable.

Right, well i bought a 306 cab just so she could try one.

This needed some work despite being a late one,but it was easy money to sell on because i got it very cheap,so a keeper or not it was all good.

I used it for work.. and its not much fun tbh.

Its the fastest one, being the 2.0 16v (pretty much the GTi-6/Mi-16/S16 unit), but this is a different type of speed, just has you going arrogantly fast without actually enjoying it. There's a lot of wind noise at speed, and it shows its weight in traffic.

Obviously fun with friends with the roof down in the sun,but nothing special otherwise.

So its going,to make way for the next trial. This is a bit more like it! More fun than i expected (having only driven 8v's before) but typically sloppy gearchange and overly light power steering - its a mint condition example of a totally original late '99 6n valver. 3dr,silver. Pics to come..

Although a strange conclusion to this thread. It looks like a good one.

Love the colour, still standard (completely blank canvas), looks clean as a whistle.

Why not?

The light power steering in cars of this age really gets on my tits though.
