Wasn't sure if anyone has posted this, but i was told today that the police are starting to fine drivers that leave snow on top of their car as it becomes a hazard whilst driving, £60 and 3 points is the possible fine.. (Bullsh*t i know but this came from someone that was pulled today for it)

Was helping some matey get his BMW unstuck today cos he crashed into a road sign, and the police turned up, couldn't see their number plates or even headlights.

I will admit this morning I cleared about 6-7 inches of snow off my windows and lights and left it at that as I couldn't be bothered.

I've heard this off countless people at work and my mates aswell.

So good one for warning people.

Absolute joke that this is true, so unfair to fine someone and give them points, especially as it's not a law that many will be familiar with. Atleast put up a TV ad or something if they're going to enforce this.

A quick pull over and a polite word would do, no need to start dishing out fines etc though.

Its in the highway code. Enough said!

if they want to see a fucking hazard they should come down my street that hasn't been gritted at all since the cold snap started and has turned into an ice rink. it's literally 2 inch deep of compressed frozen snow, i'd say that's much more of a hazard than a bit of snow on my roof.

the old 50 aka coppers don't cair its how they are paying to do there so called job protecting people I'm sure thats what they used to be for any way !

Normally agree with you on most things Guy but not this time. It's a danger. Snow on your roof, you start braking, snow piles up on bonnet and covers windscreen, you crash and kill a lot of kittens. Or, it flies off after you, and covers another car.

As for gritting. Sooner this country stops gritting and starts making winter tyres mandatory, the better.

It doesnt matter who has put the the snow on your roof. Its your car and your responisbility to make sure its safe, if that means clearing snow off your roof then boohoo its for everyones safety on the road!

I was following a people carrier the other night with a full roof of snow, then boom big gust of wind and the people carriers roof full of snow is now completely covered the front of my car and i couldnt see for afew seconds until my wipers had cleared it all. In that few seconds something could of happened and thats why the police are dishing these fines out!!! Its for everyones safety at the end of the day.

So get a grip MCLOVIN and grow up its not hard to clear the snow off your roof.

i see the logic in it, but i'll be perfectly honest and say the last thing i will be doing at 7 in the morning is standing in the cold half asleep removing all the snow from my car. i could lie and try and make out i'm perfect like so many do on here (not saying that you are doing that btw) but i'd rather just be honest than be a hypocrite

the snow coming off my car is not going to go on any one else's car, if it does then they are driving on my bumper and it's their own stupid fault for tailgating in the snow. if it goes on my own window while i'm braking, i'm pretty sure i have the car control to turn that braking into a controlled stop, which is probably what i would be doing any way if i'm braking in the snow

seems perfectly sensible to me, it is dangerous being behind a car on the motorway with a pile of snow on the roof when it starts flying off and hitting your car behind. Takes me approx ten seconds to wipe it off with my arm so it's not exactly hard is it? Also on the plus side, snow is heavy, so carrying all that extra weight about with you is also just wasting fuel.

all that snow on your roof is gonna land on the road that hasnt been gritted and will make it worse for all the other road users. just grab a brush or something to get rid of it

my plan is if some police man tries pulling me over for snow on my roof ill zoom off, my snow will go on his windscreen then he wont be able to see and pooof ill turn around with a little bit of handbraking, and disapear

Is there a certain depth of snow that must be on the roof before they can issue you a fine?

And good point by Mclovin, you should be keeping a good like 5 car lengths atleast in these conditions and snows not gonna get to your car from the car in front at that distance..

i haven't polished may car in years, this is probably why i still have a snow covered car when i get to work

are you kidding the police round here cant be bothered to adhere to the speed limit at the best of times never mind clear snow off there cars rules may be rules but if no one is told about it whos going to know and it may be in your highway code but how many people have read that tbh this just screams were losing people we need to create crimes to prove we need theses people soon it will be mandortory to have your front path cleared of snow or it will be an on the spot fine the police are taking it to far now and as guy says if you are close enough for snow to hit your vehicle from another vehicle then you are to close and need to back off

Took a picture on my camera phone earlier of a Police van with that much snow on the roof you could hardly see it's lightbar, think I'll just show them that if pulled.

I'm 6 foot, my van's 6 foot 9, not a lot I can do about it til it thaws.

i saw several police cars with loads of snow on the top of them today

also its such bullshit that snow is a hazard flying off other cars when its snowing so much. what are the wipers for?

What if you're sat in a traffic jam and it's snowing heavily? Are you supposed to get out and clear the roof before moving?
