Coming down my road, nice and slowly when my car suddenly span out of control on ice and hit the kerb

Now i need a little help as i know nothing about cars

My rear drivers side wheel looks a little bent (the top of the wheel is sticking out of the arch more than usual)

is this a serious problem? is it still legal to drive (even though i dont think i will even risk driving it like how it is untill its sorted)

Any help will be appreciated

doesnt look good tbh , I dont know how the rear end of the newer polo's setup is but i imagine you have either a bent stub axel & fooked shock ect or maybee even a bent rear beam .

Definatly going to need to go on a jig and looked at properly .

If the rear set up is the same as a mk3 I'd say it's a bent stub axle

yeah id say stub axle, not such a big deal really, but not worth driving it like that, will handle like shit and wear your tyre down weirdly

pop to a garage and ask em how much to do the stub axle, id say any competent garage could do that in an hour

it is only a step up from doing the rear brakes so maybe worth trying yourself if you fancy it?

As above. The rear beam bolts off, so chances are it can be fixed with a trip to a salvage yard.

Looks the same as my mates stub axle. Did the same thing the other night in the snow. Amazing how at low speeds you can cause so much damage. I absolutely foobard my nearside lower arm and balljoint hitting a kerb at 5mph last year. Hope you get it sorted bro. Its not that expensive. Go to a scrappys for the part x

No point trying to straighten it, will just weaken it, and you'll never get it spot on. Cheap repair if its the stub axle, probably good to change it anyway as I bet the bearings are overdue a change!

If its the beam then it will be cheap from a breakers, or someone off here who is breaking a car, I wouldn't go to a dealer for one though as you'll have a heart attack when you see the price I'd imagine.

You will never be able to straighten it anyway,get a 2nd hand stub axle, if its still bent after that it will need a beam

Anyone know roughly how much a 2nd hand stub axel would cost? or will i only find out from the scrappys itself?

Also how would i go about removing the stub axel from the car?

Get a Haynes manual. You'll have to remove the brake drum and then the rest of the brake assembly comes off with the stub axle. Cost about a tenner,its a single piece of metal that'll fit in one hand.

Personally i think you'll have bent the beam,you can find this out with a tape measure as it should be symmetrical.

Quick update, needing a little more advice

I was going to take it to the garage today to see if they could check it over, in the first picture i noticed that the bottom of the suspension spring is bent?

can anyone confirm my problems from the pic?

and is it drivable like that?

Just looks to me as if the bushing has deformed, ss long as it has not twisted that part of the beam it should be fine. You need to take the wheel and drum brake off an have a proper look at it all.

I wouldn't drive it like that nah, but I guess other people would so you'll probably get mixed responses asking that on here!

What do you mean as the bushing? Sorry absolute noob when it comes to cars!

the bush is the rubber bit that sits on the bottom of the suspension leg so u will be needing a suspension strut and just put you are spring on it, but get a garage to do iit because ud be dealin with high compressed springs but obviously you know that

i'd say the axle/beam's bent looking at that pic, at the worst case even the chassis.

Its just moved that bush as the axle's changed shape. Which its obviously going to do with it being rubber.

Might be lucky not to have damaged the shock. Any impact damage on the fuel tank? Its pretty close so if its hit hard might have damaged that.

Spring compressors are cheaper than a garage

But, if you don't know what the bush is... id give it to a garage!

+1 on beam being bent. Pretty much impossible to tell from pics and without measuring though.

I'd always say get yourself a Haynes. Even just so you can get an idea of what you're being told by the garage, and whether to believe it or not!

Trick may be to pop it to a garage who you trust, and ask them to tell you what's wrong. If it's a cheap enough fix, leave it with them, but if you need a beam, I'd expect someone on here to have one that'll be a mighty amount cheaper than one from the dealer. If you don't believe their explanation (or it's a garage you don't trust!), thank them, drive away, and ask someone else.

I heard on the news that JCT600 are offering a free 15 minute winter consultation.. I.e. They will look over your car and talk to you for 15 minutes with the problem. Free of charge.. Maybe not a bad shout to give them a call?

But I agree,

It looks like either:

a bent axle, which is a cheap home repair (or expensive garage repair made cheaper by sourcing a used axle)

A bent chassis (expensive repair or even a write off - It'll need to be laser checked)

A bent axle mounting point (fairly expensive repair)

He checked it over weds night and said bent axle

I'm now down £220, myself think its a little bit expensive but then again i want it fixed

Is this a reasonable price with labour and all?

As if it'd just be a out of shape bush doing that
