Hi! Kristian here from wintery Finland.
New to the Watercooled scene. Well, not really as I did drive Mk3 Golf variant for 10 years but sold that one lat year. After one year without I needed a dailydriver with low milage so I was lucky to stumble over this -96 1,9D Polo about 2 months ago.

Was supposed to "become just a dailydriver" that moves me from point A to point B. (=Home to work and back)



The glovebox lid was long gone from it and also the gearshift knob was gone and replaced with some tuning knob...



Current wheels are stock studded winterwheels...



The first week I got a bit scared as the gearbox had some rattling sounds but when I filled the gearbox with transmission oil the rattling disappeared.
Still need to search some for the 5th gear though. When it is warmed up properly the gearbox works just fine. Would probably need to go through the shifting mechanism to make it more exact...

It also have a loud vibration at idle. Read somewhere that it could possibly be from one enginemount that have become loose or something. Have to look into that too soon.

Got a nice surprice one day when I went home from work. All kinds of warning lights started flashing.... Turned out to be the alternator belt wheel that had failed...



Was quite a task to remove the alternator...

A few weeks before the alternator failiure I had bought a 9n3 front just for fun...

While I was at it and had the front totally out I thought I'd see how much work was involved in the idea I had in my mind...

Also painted the B-pillars flatblack.

Tried the front again when I had the front almost back together again...

Two weeks ago I ended up buying a set of front and rear lights from the German ebay...

Recieved them last week.

This week I finally found a set of summerwheels that I just had to buy.

Recieved them today!!!

Now I think I will have to stop collecting parts and as soon as possible start to do some work on the car inbetween the dailydriving. We'll see what happens during the winter as I must have all fixed for next summer..

Thanks! Making the 9n3 front fit on the 6n should not be too much work.

The width is exactly the same. Just have to reshape some around the headlights and where the bumpers meet the frontfenders

And offcourse manufactor some fittings etc. to be able to bolt the front to.

I live by the west coast of Finland about 100km north of Vasa. There are quite a lot of modified cars here too but they are spread all over the country. Mostly in the center and southern Finland though. A friend of mine won trophy at the swedish Bugrun with his Golf Mk2 this year.

I've mostly worked with Aircooled VW's so far, and still am.

This summer I only saw one really nice VW there, a brown mk1 cab just outside Helsinki. It's nice to know that there is a scene over there though

By the looks of the skills you have making the mini bug for your son, you will have no problems fitting that front end, cant wait to see how it turns out

Refitted the original steel front spoiler with the cracked lip temporarilly until I get the time to start working on the front after Christmas.

"The Dirty Diesel" as it sits now as it have been too cold the past months to wash without danger of freezing doors...

Yes, I agree that there is two ways to make a face lift of this kind. Either the wrong way or the right way.

From experience I usually can see in the very beginning an idea if it is even possible. I this case I would have discarded the complete idea if I had seen it impossible when I mocked up the 9n3 front onto the 6n.

The size is perfect. Just needs some small persuation to fit. I can see the finished product allready in the back of my head so it will not be impossible, just needs some patience and time..

Yes, I've been said to be crazy with my previous projects too... MUAHAHAAA! (In evil laugh tone)

are you doing 9n3 headlight etc aswell? or is it just gonna be mashed together with the normal 6n front end, kinda like one of those fake fibreglass jobbies on ebay?

I will use 6n style headlights as posted above but the front will not look like those halfdone fiberglass kits sold... :-)

I've seen several (ugly) versions of those...

The goal is to make it look like it always was ment to look like that.

Had to go to the garage even though it was a bit cold today...

Tested the rearlights and the wheels. Still need to switch the brakelight wires with the turnsignal wires as the lights are for 6n2... :-)

Didn't test the frontlights yet..

love how u just tied the 9n3 front on and obviously drove around like that lol! i think this is going to be a strange project to watch... all the better imo :) cant wait to see finished product.

Last wednesday when I went to work I had to plough through 40cm new of snow the whole 40km's... Was fun though kept cruising at 80km/h all the way..

Here's how it looked when I got home later that day...

I had a near death experience two days ago...

On the way home I was a bit tired and also planing on what to do at home so I had too much distraction in my mind..

In a left turn on the road I somehow got over to the wrong side and in just splitseconds pull back over to my side of the road... Missed the oncoming car by slightly nothing. Just the doors and rear wheelwells that took come damage when we scraped each others sides at 80km/h with each cars.

Also the rearviewmirrors on both driverside doors smached together. Mine also hit the driversdoorwindow resulting in thousands of glassgrain in the car and on the road...

The rear wheels didn't either get a hit. Just the fenderarch.

I take this as a sign that I have to start doing the mods this spring.. :)

Anyone got a tip on how to replace the broken driversdoor glass??

Is there some good to know things to make it easier or is it a straight forward tare down and put back together thing?
