hi to all I've just brought a polo sallon with wide whhels and slamed to the deck its looks well that low BUT when i jacked it up i suddenly reallised that the previous owner has just cut the springs wich i know is not good so I'm looking for a set of lowered springs but not sure whats the best mm to drop it by i can get 40mm lowering kit but again not sure if it will be to low or not low enough can someone help please many thanks

how low do you want to go? Do you like it slammed? If so 80mm is about as close to slammed as you will get on a lowering kit.

40mm is pointless unless you don't want any one to notice that it's lowered. 60mm is a good copromise but if your running 13" wheels they will look lost in the arch gap.

I'm running 13 inches on 50 profile so like you say 40mm don't sound like enough but if I go 80 mm will I need to change things like anti roll bar links

really? most mk3 polo's ain't worth that much

plus there's no saying that the coilovers will go low enough. any that are converted from a polo strut won't go silly low because of the length of the original strut. you'd need to find some that had had the strut shortened and shorter dampers used.

imo no coilovers are worth 500+ especially if you only want to go low on them, you might as well shorten your struts, find some uprated shorter dampers from another car and move the spring cups further down the strut. you could then fine tune the ride height with a pair of front lowering springs of your chosen length. probably cost around 60-70 quid for the fronts the buy a pair of mk1 golf rear coil overs to match the rear ride height.

or if coilovers really are your thing and you want to go real low convert to poverty spec mk1 golf coilies, using second hand parts it can be done for less than 150 easily.

Well, they are 15s after all. However, looking at other 40 drop pics, I reckon I got sent a lower kit. It's coming off soon, so I'll have a measure, and know for sure

it's up to whether the guy wants it to sit right and put up with it at a fixed height really

the difference is the mk2 golf has a chassis that can make the most out of some thing like that and i'd expect that for 1k that are shit hot. mk3 polo coilovers for 500 are just coilovers, they are not that expensive because they are a shit hot spec, just because they are a ball ache to make.

but the mk2 gti 16v is a nice bit of kit with a good chassis and power delivery as standard, any thing that improves on that can only be a good thing

175/65-14s? They are massive for a Mk1/2/3, the biggest fitted to them out the factory was 175/60-13s, so not only are you a wheel size bigger, you're also a tyre profile bigger!

i was referring to the massive arch gap, not the ground clearance. tbh the rolling radius of the 15's wouldn't be far off that of the standard 13's i would imagine?

tbh, i want coilies for the MK3, not just to go lower, but so i can adjust the height as and when and to also give a better ride than the bollocks i have on atm lol.

However, i wouldnt get cheap coilies (£500 are the cheap ones btw) I'd be looking at the £800+ coilovers that are decent!

But, £800? Could buy a G40 conversion for that

£800 could buy you a half reasonable Mk2 GTI and half reasonable coilies for it

Yes mate, they are a little large. Maybe they are 60's. But iirc, the rolling radius isnt much greater than standard. I bought them on I'll advice a few years ago, and have only just worn them out. Have been waiting to buy some more, but I'm poor Plus they were dead cheap for Dunlop p100's. 30 Brick per shoe

it is low i put it on my mates mot ramp and when i went in the brake rollers my sump hit floor and i carnt go over any speed pumps lol
