Hi I have a polo 1.4 working perfectly i.e. gear change, but the clutch pedal started to squeak few months back. I sprayed some WD-40 and it went away. Few weeks after it had returned and I went further to see what is was.

I found this metal plate which top of the pedal sits on (picture attached) when pulled back and forward is started to squeak. I ran my fingers at the back and found a sort of small metal rod which went into a rubber seal. I exposed as much of the rod by pulling the plate back and applied some grease. The problem went away but then returned.

People have said that it may be a pedal box, but can't seem to see where it would be.

iv got a 1.4cl and mine started to squeek for a bit..had a look around and did similar things to what u did and it came back just like yours..so in the end i just left it and it did eventualy go away on its own..just turn your music up louder and youll never know

If anything, it's going to be a broken pedal box.

From looking at the picture; between the threaded rod and the metal bit to the left of it (not the one with the rubber stopper), there is a weld seam.

The orange part looks like rust? Which would suggest a broken seam? This'll mean your pedal box has gone! :( It's about 55 for a new box, and then, if you're mechanically inclined, about 4 hours work (to take out the steering wheel), box out, box in!

same thing happend to me BUT then my pedal box went :(

Is it possible to just reweld the existing one? Think mine might be on the way out too!! Is this the thing that has stupid shear nuts to get it off??

I could not see any rust, but how would water get in for rust?

I'm able to move the plate back and fourth but with force, behind the plate is a rod/stick which goes into the body which I greased then the noise stopped.

If I were to leave it, what would happen?

does the pedal sit lower than the brake pedal?

Can you move the pedal side to side in what you would call "excessive" movement

Is the clutch heavy? - Most 6n2's will creak with a heavy clutch as there cable.

You can reweld the existing pedal box, its normally a better fix than replacing it. Replaced one will suffer the same problem!

There doesn't need to be excessive water for rust to occur, just the water from the atmosphere and the air! :) It just looked like an orange patch so i assumed rust.

If you leave it, you rust the clutch pedal falling off (mine did when i pulled the pedal up to clean the car), and the whole bracket came apart in my hands.

It took a few hours of headscratching to take it apart, but i rewelded mine. I doubt the strength the box has and i guess it'll fail in the future. But if it keeps me going, meh, its free! :)

Nope the pedal sits fine, next to the brake pedal.

Nope can't move pedal side to side.

When I appiled grease few days ago I removed the pedal and its seemed fine. I didn't find at rust at all.

Would you know what is behind the plate?

How do I get the pedal box off? Is it a long process?

OK, confimed its broken.

It snapped on the way home.

Going to get a mate to put a bolt through the plate.
