I dont see how you can call it "poinless" drive on any wet road for a few miles and the rear screen becomes covered in spray, then you don't have the best rearwards view, only relying on the door mirrors!! and if it was a "poinless" item why would VW and all other car manufacturers waste time and money designing and fitting them!!

Nope.. thats not true. It's not part of the test, so it doesn't matter if its working or not its just not tested. Just like a spare wheel. But if you do remove the wiper make sure you remove the motor as well as they might fail it on having a pointy thing sticking out the back of your car! :-D

Rear wiper maybe pointless to you but it has a use, especially on cars like the polo. As the the spray from the tyres coat the rear screen and can make it near impossible to see anything though it. This is less an issue on saloon type cars as the rear lights just get coated and the flow of air over the car tends to keep it mostly clean/clear. Interesting though (well not really) lot of Japanese saloon type cars have rear wipers.

haha woo little emotional..but a rear wiper really isn't aesthetically pleasing, so i think pointless is referring to looks, but on a polo it is pointless the rain falls straight off mine and even on a wet day with no rain the drops slide off, so no biggy :p

Oh oh and you can just spray RainX on the rear window then the wiper really becomes pointless lol

RainX only works with rain does not work with dirt/muddy spray!

Then you need DirtX or MuddyX lol

6n's are so bad for throwing everything up the back of the car.

rainx is ok for pure water, but the dirty muddy water on roads, and especially salt this time of year is a nightmare!!

TO many follow the "sence" there for think its not worth having.

Well when I got pulled over by the police it was winter and pretty bad weather and they wouldn't let me go until I showed them both front and back wipers were working.

on my mk2 my rear window gets so muddy and almost impossible to see through. need to check the pipes for window as motor works but doesnt pump water out so theres a blockage some where .

everyone should do their driving test in a van.... since buying my caddy (solid rear doors) i have becomeso good a reveersing, checking side mirrors etc that when i get back in car with good visability, ill get mistaken for Russ Swift!

so how do van drivers with no rear view mirrors drive ? a rear window with a wash wipe is a luxury not a neccesity

oh yeah and as the mot law stands if it aint fitted it don't have to be tested so if you remove the wiper arm then it's not fitted so it don't need testing

since passing my test 2 years ago no matter what i'm driving be it a car van i never ever drive into a parking space i always reverse and by doing that i can use the side mirrors to park almost perfectly in said parking space even parking a car i never use the rear view mirror the only time i use a rear view mirror is to see when some idiot is sat on my ass goading me to go faster or get out of the way so like i maintain a rear view is a luxury not a neccesity

This is what I said, if it's fitted it has to be working and will be tested, but people jumped in and said it's not part of the test and it doesn't matter.

Obviously your internet-based knowledge far surpasses that of someone who used to work for an MOT tester.

You can go to test with a broken back wiper, or washer, or both, a 6 inch blade where there should be a 12 inch one, or even an arm with no blade on it. You can have a stone chipped to fuck back window, a cracked back window, no back window, a bit of hardboard where there should be a back window, or a 100% tint on your back window, and it's not a fail. (I've passed a straight MOT with at least 4 of these defects over the years)

i do remember as an apprentice and i used to assist with the mot's of taxi's both private hire and hackney the rear wash wipe (if fitted ) had to be working effectively different mot law's for different classes of vehicles can become confusing

I once submitted my dad's vw camper van that he had fabricated his own rock and roll bed in and due to the seatbelt laws it failed re-submitted it the next day with no seat's but a bed needless to say the mot tester thought i was having a laugh at his expense (which i was) but had to pass it lol
