JOM coilovers (pictures added!)

Featured Replies

Hey,

Iv recently fitted some JOM budget coilovers to my car to last through winter.

I have the fronts set with 5mm of thead left to go, and the rears have about 20mm.

I have set each height side to side the same, so there is slight variance in threads left on each side, however, at a guess, theres 5mm at the front and 15-20mm at the rear.

I have measured my heights in comparison to a standard 6n (12 years old, so has obviously a slightly lower height than standard)

Measuring from the centre of the wheel to the top of the radius lip on the arch, the corner where youd roll upto (where it flats out for about 1'')

I have the following measurements:

Standard Front: 350mm

My Front: 290mm

So around 60mm drop.

Standard Rear: 360mm

My Rear: 300mm

Again around 60mm drop.

These measurements are rough, however, id have thought id would be lower, especially seeing as there is 5mm to go on the front and its dropped 60mm and should be around 100mm at the bottom of threads?!

I know these may settle a bit, but I have already done around 200miles on them and it has dropped a few mm, nothing more.

Just wondering what I could have done wrong?

I am a mechanic by trade, and I'm pretty sure they're fitted correctly, my dad whos also been a mechanic all his life, among running race cars etc also cannot see any other way for them to be fitted?

Any advice/info appreciated.

Maybe I have the top mounts fitted wrong or something?

Not too sure?

Thanks.

?

Is the chassis sat on the ARB? That my issue why I can't go lower..

  • Author

Nah I have no arb :p it's just not low lol. I doubt it's gonna settle like 30mm on the front.

When you swap the front top mounts, obviously you need the bearing and the rubber which goes above this, but do you use the thin plate below too?

post pics up???

I'm not sure how they're measured when they say 100mm drop, I've still got helpers and I'm on 14s and i can just get my foot under my sills and I'm all the way down

14's on 185 55 r14's, so standard rolling radius tyres.

fronts have 5mm of thread left, rears have 20mm.

so the rears maybe ok, i guess id find another 30mm drop with 20mm of thread,

but the fronts have 5mm of thread left, and its not even low?!

unless you have MASSIVE feet, id say iv done something wrong haha!

its down literally 60mm, maybe 70 at a push?!

thanks

I have the same problem when i bought them i thought they were 100mm coilys but iv read on ebay were i got them from they go from 30mm to 85mm front and back and also on other people's page's where there selling them they say 100mm. But i think they are 85mm :/

I know something isn't right though as plenty of other people have these and are much lower!

Helpp pleasee I wanna sort this tomorrow so I hav my car for wed

just take out the helper springs

That's not a fix though as I know it should be lower for how it's all set so the only thing I can put it down to is the top mounts?

Do you rid the ally bit that comes with them and us the standard thin steel one then bearing and rubber mount or what?

I currently have ally one, then the steel one, then bearing, then the rubber. I thought you'd have to use the steel one as it has the right taper and shape for the bearing an rubber??

i swear someone told me that JOM coilovers only go down 80-100 mm or so or maybe i dreamed it :p :ninja:

Well considering it's not even down 70 that's a bit worrying lol.

I guess I'll just take it apart tomorrow and mess with top mounts seeing nobody seems to know

dont worry, after looking at several guides and having general common sense i know they are fitted fine. well safely anywho.

i will just wind all the way down and drive and drive and hope they settle a bit, cause tbh, its not low at all, would have been lower on standard springs with some fat passengers

IIRC you just use the ally one (is that the blue bit? ) then the bearing then the rubber - at least thats how i did it

Done now, is fully down: isn't as low as it should be but I'm happy with height

Thats what I did as well, the ally bit is the right size/taper to fit into the rubber, well at least it was on my 6n coilovers.

Sounds to me like you've assembled them using the spring top cap. This is discarded when fitting coilovers.

that's really not that far off how low they will go with the helpers in mate, i measured the compressed helpers once and they were 40mm iirc, i did it to prove the people that kept trying to claim they had 'slammed my car 120mm' with the helpers still in were talking out of their arse

although as toby says it's worth checking that you haven't fitted that spring cap, easy mistake to make and would go away to explain why your still off the -80mm that you should be, although i guess some of that could be down to the measurement's not being bang on and the standard car being on old shocks and springs.

Thanks for help guys.

Was just a little unsure about the spring top cap but it's not fitted anyway. Have the lockring flush with the bottom thread so "all the way down" helpers are still in but it's okay for wintertime now. Going to take my rear helpers out as it's far too soft and scrapes on everything.

Thanks again

taking the helpers out won't make it any stiffer mate, they are fully compressed all the time that the car is on the ground, they are only there to keep the main spring seated when you jack the car up.

also gotta say, i'm not really a fan of mk4's but yours works really well, nice and simple but effective. the smoked lights ect works so well with that blue

Nah the rear of mine mine under full weight the helpers are only about half compressed so all the movement is being done by them not the main spring, but there's so much thread I should be able to take them out and have it a nice height with the springs full retained when jacked up. Worth a try anyway haha! And thanks mate, just the bodywork let's it down tbh!
