I'm looking to putting my golf back on the road - on the hurry up as the gearbox is shagged, i've managed to find a 085 five speed box from a polo the code stamped on it is AHZ and code on my old one is CWM from what i've managed to findout from info off this forum the gear ratios are higher on the replacement, i'm just not sure what that means regarding how the car will drive. Please can someone explain as i'm new to all this sort of thing.

Just one other thing i've remembered is the offside drive shaft flange on the AHZ is shorter that the CWM one by about 10 mm is that a problem.

Yes the golf match is a mk3 1.4 - the polo gearbox i bought off ebay and was quoted as being " removed from a polo ARZ code 5 speed ", also when i checked the flange/drive rotation i noted that when the offside one was rotated clockwise the other went backwards is that normal? as my old one didn't do that.

On the subject of the flange/drive, with the offside one being shorter on the polo - how easy is it to swap the flange and seal over from the old onto the new one? as i seem to have read that someone on the forum has done this before.

Very easy. I run the 6N box in my mk1 Golf so have gone down the route of removing the extension. I fitted a mk3 Polo 8P box to my son's mk3 1.4 ABD and had to add the seal extension and corresponding drive flange. The seal housing comes off with gentle persuasion using a large screwdriver. The drive flange unscrews. There is a brass collar behind the flange that won't fit in the older box. I just left this out.

5th - 0.85

FD - 4.27

CWM

1st - 3.45

2nd - 1.95

3rd - 1.25

4th - 0.89

5th - 0.74

The AHZ is pretty crap compared with the CWM. The common mk3 Polo box, the 8P, is the same ratios as the CWM. For the same revs the AHZ speed will be 80% compared to the CWM/8P. Unless you're really desperate, I'd keep looking. It's nearly 3 hours of your life to swap out the Golf box and you don't want to do it twice.

it might be a drive shaft instead (i have managed to get a spare offside one ) as the noise stops when the car turns right. we'll see what happens - watch this space.

I'm expecting the old box you've put back in to be knackered if you turn one drive flange and the other doesn't turn the other way. The replacement is shorter geared and that means higher revs,but at least its not as likely to drop its guts all over the road.

The old gearbox when in gear the flanges turn the same way - finished it this evening so haven't tested it yet as its my birthday and went out for a meal, so will try the car friday see if the noise is still happening.

well tried it friday and the noise is still there, but when i was out the bloody gear selector coupling worked loose, i was able to drive back stuck in forth gearbox. But haven't attempted to fix it yet as theres snow on the ground and the wife wouldn't let me lie in it, as she knows i'd probably end up playing snowballs with the kids.
