G40s are and option, but are more of a comitment, and nobody apreciates a G not being looked after properly.

Vr6's are are win imo, and not more on insurance than a G.

Price range I'm aiming for a £1k-1.5k car, and the rest for insurance.

A converted G40 would be nice as it doesnt hold its rarity factor, so its going to be cheaper. but it will be declared and wont be cheap insurance.

Just asking other people on the suggestions, incase I'm over looking something.

obviously i need a fast car with the least insurace costs.

I was in the same position earlier this year and wanted somthing quick, I really wanted a g40 but you have go spend a fair old wedge to make them quick. I have 2 mates with tuned g40's and to get them to their spec I would have to spend loads, but a Toyota starlet gt turbo turned up and it was the right price, great condition, quick and old school. I wanted to stay with vw but it has so many things going for it, it's so relible, looks cool IMO, 160bhp with 400£ spent, spend 1-2k and you

can have 200+hp it weighs 850kg, it's shows up many other cars, the other night had a play with a vxr and we were even. Also because it is a jap import it is fully spec'ed.

Lol I have gone on a bit but they are great little cars for the money and tunablaty. Insurace for me was 1400 2yncb, 21.

matt vr6's are a big bag of fail, if that's sort of car your looking at then forget it and buy a mk2 golf 16v, it's every thing the vr6 golf isn't.

If your not fussed about sticking with vw then what about a mk2 astra gte 16v? Don't be put off by the brainless minority that try to brand them as 'chav' these cars are fucking animal's, make sure you get a good one tho as with any car of this sort a lot have been neglected.

the Vr just has bum-tingling noise going for it though, plus its comfy, but utter gash on handling and looks mk3 wise.

If theres a converted, 1.4 16v, g40 in a mk2/3 il be snapping that up for the right price.

Starlets are good little cars, even the boggo 1.3s are nippy, would have to be a mk2 i think? 1997 ish one.

But the jap scene is just like some of the vw scene, twats ect.

Shame you looking now. There was loads of G40 conversions knocking about for rock bottom prices not all that long ago.

Starlet gets my vote. Good luck finding a decent one for under £1500 though. When I was looking at them you can't get a decent Starlet for under 2K, and struggle to find a glanza under £3K.

I would go for Ibiza Cupra as well, not an R as they only brought 75 into the country and they go for a fair bit now.

And in terms of plasticky interiors, surely it's no worse than a car from the Nineties. At least it's relatively modern.

If you're after a G40 or VR6 then you'll be bored by a Passat. Even a 20vt.

Integra and Glanza are both good shouts though. Same shite plastic argument as a Clio though.

£1500, nippy and reasonable insurance... Mag review performance figures too.

Volvo 850/S70/V70 T5. Could also just about get a C70 coupe but the looks won't suit everyone. Looking at a ~7s/140 mph car but easily modded.

Loads of stuff at that money.

I looked at a lot of Glanzas before I bought mine, and although you can find bargains, I wouldn't pay any less than £2k for one, and even then I'd be very weary..

Starlet GT Turbo is a great call.. 90's jap styling is cool in my book, very good standard power to weight ratio, good handling standard, very reliable, interior may be plasticy but you get electric everything and it will all work.

Insurance on GT Turbos is also a lot easier than Glanzas, trust me! most companies don't even list the latter, whereas I got quotes from places like Elephant for £1300 for the GT, at 19!

Main issue is how it's been treated.. you'll see modified ones go cheap and think you're getting more bang for your buck, but in a lot of cases that will be literal, when the engine gives over due to cheap and fast tuning.

Only other thing I'd consider is a MK2 16v, just a great all round car to be fair. You might find a few Civics within budget, 1.6 VTEC's etc but they aren't to everyones taste...

the bimmer is a little to big for me, but 0-60 of ~6sec is impressive, i know I'm being very picky.. but we all want the perfect car.

I like the feel of smaller cars.

Officially the 328i is 6.7s to 60 if I remember reading my handbook right, but a few magazines have various results, one in particular recorded 5.9...

One problem with the 328i is although it's the sort of car that will happily shrug off type Rs and the like, they don't feel overly fast, so if you want something that feels rapid it probably isn't the car for you. For that, you need a light car with plenty of torque from low revs.

it was the same when i drove a twin turbo supra, felt slow... but the clocks where flying up.
