i suggest the main cause of your problem is lack of education. please go back to school and learn how to construct a legible sentence.

insurance is expensive. you should have got quotes before you got the car, you will probably need to sell it and get a 1l shitbox.

however there are a few things you can do, e.g. adding your parents as named drivers, or even getting a scheme such as admiral multicar with your parents. i would suggest declaring modifications though, as if you haven't declared them you may as well not have insurance at all (your insurance will be void).

all of this information probably could have been found in the paperwork section, which coincidentally is where this should have been posted.

have a pleasant day.

LOL quite funny you are.

Maybe you should've spent the money on insurance before spending it all on doing all that stuff to it???

£5000 for insurance on a 1.4 Polo worth only about £1000 in the eyes of an insurance company?

Insurance for the under 21s is actually getting stupid now and I thought it was bad when I was 17.

What I would do...maybe for the first year at least is change the registered keeper of the car to the likes of your mum or dad and then get them to take out a policy on the car in their name. They will be like £200 to insure it or something silly cheap, then you get added to the policy as a named driver...this will bump the policy up to about a grand or so but it shouldn't be anywhere near the £5000 you were quoted yourself.

Thats what I did when I was 17 and it was the much cheaper option.

There are down sides as in you won't earn any no claims but you can't go throwing away £5k just to earn a years NCB for when you renew insurance at 18.

Great answer, but what you are suggesting is called 'fronting' which is classed as fraud and carries a criminal penalty. If caught, and the insurers do ask questions of neighbours etc should there be a claim, whoever took out the insurance will be taken to court and face a heavy fine and/or a custodial sentence (try getting insurance after that because you would have to declare!). The young driver will be convicted of driving without insurance, penalty six points (not wanted if in first two years of driving) and a fine.

Would you like to be involved in an accident when the person that has done the damage, is not legally insured????

Thats why I said you change the keeper on the V5 to the parent who takes out the policy.

Then in the eyes of the law jordy or whatever his name is, is just borrowing the car from his parents.

Yes in theory the parent would have to be the 'main' user but I'm sure said parent could use the car for work for the year they are the keeper in order to justify this, then there would be nothing wrong with jordy taking the car out at nights or weekends as thats when most 17 year olds drive anyway.

Slightly different to what most 17 years olds do...as in they are the keeper on the V5 but their parents hold the insurance policy.

Still on dodgy ground, as should there be a claim, the insurers will ask questions of neighbours to reveal who drives the car the majority of the time. The insurance companies are not stupid, and have got wise an very inquisitive about who actually drives the car.

At the end of the day I and many others would not like to be involved in an accident with someone who is trying to manipulate the insurers in their favour. Basically they are driving without insurance

So what about familes who share a car?

Say a husband and wife have one car.

The husband uses the car from 7 till 5 everyday to travel to work and back doing a total of 20 miles.

Then at night the wife takes the car from 6 till 9 to travel to a part time job...again doing 20 miles a day.

Who would be the main driver then? The neighbours would more likely see the wife driving the car most so would she be the main driver?

Personally I think the insurance and law would only look into a claim where they suspect 'fronting' if the situation is like most out there, i.e. 17 year old as keeper on log book and parents as main policy holder.

And at the end of the day how do you prove 100% who drives the car the most? Surely cant rely purely on nosey neighbours? I doubt if old Margaret from across the road stood up in court and said "At 7pm every night when I do my dishes Jordy goes out in the car and I never see anyone else driving" that would hold as proof of him being the main driver? What about the other 23 hours of the day when she isn't looking out the window doing dishes?

kwijibo_coupe <- finally someone who actually wants to help me and give me advice rather than just insult me. i really appreiciate it mate, and to me your plan sounds like a winner and i did what you said on and I've got a quote for £2224.73 which is more than half of what I've been gettin so thanks so much,i wouldnt like to get hit by an uninsured driver but what kwijibo_coupe is saying is true, i only wwanna use the car and night and then to drive to work on saturday and sunday and then my dad can use the car to go to work monday to friday then he is still usein the car more as he drives to shewsburry from telford everyday. so this way it wont be fronting either.

so kwijibo_coupe thanks alot mate

Defend it how you like, it is still fronting and illegal. Given this is an open forum advocating the practice can and will be noticed, by investigators. The days whereby insurers would just pay fault claims are long gone. They look at the policy holder/registeed keeper, and who is on the policy. Would you say you were the main user if you werent, knowing the insurance company will explore every avenue to claw the money back, and face having a criminal record??

At the end of the day, it's his choice as to whether he breaks the law or not, all we can do is offer sound advice

I've found on quotes that no matter if I'm the main driver and policy holder with my dad as the named driver

or

the other way round, the quotes have been the same..

definatly advised whackin a parent on insurance to bring price down..

tesco value insurance is cheap.. go directly to tesco website..

dont use comparison websites, they rip you off.

my gti is insured for 1200 a year fully comp atm with churchill.. (directly)

i thought it would be fun to get a quote for my own car on confused.com with exactly same details as my current policy..... and said that cheapest quote was 5500... what a load of bullsh*t them websites are!

chears buddy ill give tesco a try :) thanks for your help :)

Adrian flux

I dont agree with fronting either but tbf if your dad is taking the car to work then i guess its not fronting as well he will actually be the main user, plus it might even save your dad on a bit of fuel?? :S Try admiral direct they gave me cheap insurance. Otherwise could you not put your car back to standard for a year and then put all the stuff back on next year....check out the price differences and then decide.

Neither do i.. Yes Fronting is wrong and i understand that. Yeah it will save my dad money on fuel too! That sounds good, ill give that a try.. Thankyou very much :)

or when (i'm guessing) a 40ish year old mum is the main policy holder on a highly modified hatch back with her son as a named driver, insures are not stupid and they are all over this sort of scam right now and are coming down hard on it.

if insurers are in any doubt these day's they will (at best) refuse to cover you in the event of an accident and you will be liable for all coasts of the accident, at worst they will have you done for fraud and you will be liable for all costs due to the accident.

we store crash damaged car's in our yard at work and during the summer while sitting in the sun at dinner time i'd chat to some of the inspectors that came to evaluate the damage to them. one was telling us that insurance companies are refusing to pay for record amounts of crashes these days because there's just so many scams going on, it's costing them millions. so they are doing all they can to get out of having to cover the costs for as many crashes as they can.

another answer is whack the car in a garage or under cover and get a £200 beast like a mk2 (i had one) much cheaper to insure my insurance on a mk2 1.3 was £967 when i was 17 and it was the most fun you can have in a car you could drive flat out everywhere at not even be breaking the speed limit took me on a few hundred mile trips and was awesome i highly recommend it

don't quite understand what the problem with my comment was... it contained all of the relevant information, plus some constructive criticism regarding how to improve your likelihood of getting a better answer in the future.

why ask a question if you're going to get shitty when you don't like the answer?

in all seriousness though, insurance is only going to get worse. I'm considering getting a slower car next because as much as i'd love a fast car i'm actually struggling to run my car at the moment. If i was you i'd bite the bullet, sell the car and accept the fact driving the slowest car in the world is still better than traveling on foot or by moped. To be honest the car you have sounds like a pretty decent motor, you could probably buy and insure a 1l mk3 or 6n and have cash to spare for the money you'd get from selling a tidy 6n2. plus you'd actually be able to insure it legally.

If you insure a car that you own (your name on the logbook) and put your parent as main driver and you as named driver that is fronting and is illegal, most policies state main policy holder has to be registered owner of vehicle.

But if your parent owns the car (their name on the logbook) and they are main driver and you are named that is not illegal, regardeless of who drives the car more often. Only know this because when i first got driving i spoke to the insurance company and signed car over to my dad and went on his policy as named informing them i drive the car more often, they did not have a problem.

as it states in big letters on the front of your log book... 'a log book is not proof of ownership.'

so no matter who's name is on the log book, if you try to make a claim and they suspect some kind of fraud is being commited they will investigate. The fact that the car was in your name and you tried to insure it as yours before switching it to your dad will also be on record (although i'm not sure how long that info is stored for?).

It doesn't matter how you try and dress this up its still fraud and still punishable with criminal convictions.

But rather than being told opinions and hear'say why not ask one of the two insurers that sponser this site to get some facts on the matter?

so what have you search so far? have you checked out the price comparison site?

I am afraid that most insures wont touch modded cars especially for a 17year old but I cant see why there wouldnt be someone willing to cover you for reasonable money when you have only really done aesthetic mods...

have you checked out e-car insurance? these guys were ace when I was 18...

You should be able to find something cheaper than that... I got a G40 when I was 19 and although it was a lot I only paid £2,700 on the standard car...

Good luck anyway...

Like said, 'Fronting' your insurance would not be a good idea...

Surely you would have known that insurance is crazy at the moment? I would have loved a modified 1.4 at 17, however I knew that i'd have to pay a stupid amount for insurance lol

The best thing to do is do your Pass Plus test, as this lowers your insurance with some companies and add your parents/guardians on to your insurance as named drivers.

Try elephant.co.uk, Adrian Flux, Admiral and Aviva, as these are the insurance companies that quoted me the least amount of money...

Good luck
