Just kinda wanted someone else opinion on this..

I've known for a while now that I've needed to replace the head gasket as I've had all the usual symptoms of it going e.g. loss of water but no sign of leaks, gunky oil gap from mixing with coolant, misfiring all the time due to compression leakage.. and so on..

Anyway, overall it's gonna cost me more to get it all fixed, as well as the tappets which have been out for months now and they need doing.. So next week I know someone who will be doing a straight engine swap with another AEX engine for me. But! on Monday is my MOT.. I can drive it short distances without any problems, and there isn't any smoke as yet.. just tends to overheat.. so do you think it should be fine to go through on monday, as the MOT is more of a road safety/emissions test??? untill i can get the engine change during the week? or is it a waste of money..

thanks for any replies, would really appreciate your ideas on this.

Your saying it's misfiring. I'm pretty certain that will affect emissions.

You could take it in and it'll pass, then you can do the engine swap in your own time.

Your may pay for an MOT only for it to fail and only have a week for it to pass before you have to repay, If that happens then it's an engine swap which may not go smoothly, may take time, may be a crap engine etc. So that route will cost you time and money.

But if you wait for the engine swap, it may take time once again or not go smoothly. Which costs time.

You have to sum up whether its worth the risk over the cost and time.

here is an equation I have drew up for you: Risk x Cost x Time = Next time you know you have an issue with your car and an impending MOT pull your finger out and stop being a lazy idiot.

you actually have 10 working days (exc weekends) so you have two weeks for a partial retest, also it is up to the garage if they charge you for a partial retest if you take the car away from the mot station.

Well thanks for the advice.. kinda.

The reason why I haven't been able to do anything about it is cause I've only just managed to get employed, I haven't been able to get a job for months, and i'm at college half the time so can't work full time. The car also got sold to me like this and I didn't know any better. Also I passed my test only a couple of weeks ago, so this is all a rather new thing to me.

I'm obviously gonna take care of my car once it's all sorted, and now I can afford to it'll be easier.. but this is the problem I have now, and just saying stop being lazy isn't really gonna help anyone cause I've tried my best to get where I am now, and it's not like I can help any of this.

You'll probably be pleased to hear I got crashed into about 20 mins while parked outside my house, so it'll probably be a write off.

Yeah cheers dude, I know the guy so he's not gonna charge me for a re test which is pretty nice of him. Thanks for the info.

Doubt it'll pass emissions, and by rights they should decline to continue with a test if it shows signs of overheating.

Ahh fair enough.

Well I just rang up and cancelled the MOT as my car is going to be a Write off thanks to some chappy in his work van while i was inside my house :(
