Well.. The topic is kinda self-explanatory. EPC light turned on earlier today, and brake lights are not working. I suppose this something to do with each other. I have checked the fuses, they are ok. I have located a dealer with the brake light swich, it was quite cheap, so i have decided to try to fix it myself. To be honest, i know practically nothing about cars/cars electronics. A explanation on how to do this will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Very rough guide as I've never changed a brake light switch on a Polo before (have on an Audi though, should be similar?) Usually you'll find the switch located behind the brake pedal itself. There'll be an electrical connector on it, unplug it, and the switch itself I think needs to be twisted round before it can be pulled out. (Bayonet type fitting)

On the new one you'll see a pin (with presumably a spring behind it).. don't unclick it until you've fitted it. Can't remember why not, but that's what somebody warned me about before. Someone else will hopefully elaborate.

I'm sure it'll all make sense once you're looking at it the car

haven't bought the new swich yet, so the dont unclick-part didnt really make much sense. Anyways, will buy swich tomorrow and give it a try. Hopefully will i then understand, thanks a lot :)

By the way, i had a hard time with checking all the fuses, as the scheme obviously was incorrect (the service manual and the one behind the fuse box cover was different). Anyone who have the correct layout for a 2006 mod, and can explain excactly which number the brake light fuse are?

Thanks, then its definitely not the fuse. Parts store will have the swich on stock on wednesday, will give it a try then. Thanks for all help so far, guys :-)

Does anyone have a quick guide on how to remove the panel below the steering wheel, for easier access to the swich? The guide in the link above seems to be slightly different from what i have.

Being honest, it depends on what spec Polo you have - for the last few years, most basic models don't have a plastic cover around the pedals - but the higher spec ones do.

If you have a cover, you undo the three or four screws along the leading edge, and out it comes.

To renew the brake light switch (which by your description would be the most likely candidate), look up along the brake pedal until you see the switch - you'll have the new one at that stage, so you'll know what they look like. Pull the wiring plug off the end of it (squeezing the tab), then rotate the switch about 45 degrees - and out it comes. It really is as simple as that.

If you have to remove the cover, and put it back again afterwards, the entire job will take 10/15 mins. If not, under 5 mins.

Lastly, you may have error codes stored if the system has detected a fault - find anyone with the right gear to sweep the codes IF you still have a warning light on. If you're near Herts I would do it for you free of charge.

I am a bit chocked, actually i managed to replace the swich at first try and now the brake lights are working properly :-)

But, the EPC light are still turned on. Probably due to the reason you describe above, but Bergen (Norway) are a bit too far from Herts Thanks anyways. I will have 60k service just after new years, so i`ll just ask them to fix it.

Edit: On 2nd startup, the EPC light was gone as well.
