35-40 is way too high for a 195 section tyre on a light car like a 6n2. Personally I'd be putting in 30 PSI tops... even less in this weather.

I have 195/50/15 on my steelies here in Australia. I run 35psi (Though the weather is a lot warmer here so that may differ tjings to UK conditions)

Fair enough people but the point I am trying to put across is that 195/50-15 is not a standard tyre size for a 6n2 Polo, and the 6n2 is quite a light car. When running wide, oversize tyres, you may need to reduce the pressure within reason, in order to maintain a useful contact patch. There may well be people running higher pressures, but in my opinion, with those tyre sizes I'd be running 30 PSI.

I tend to check my tyre pressures after a hard thrash, perhaps because I tend to drive at higher speeds than most people or maybe something else, but you really would be surprised how much your tyre pressures increase after being used properly. For this reason, I run 28 PSI up front in my Mk2 Golf and 30 PSI in the rear, with no adverse effects. I've managed to make a set of Yokohama Paradas last 8,000 miles without showing a hint of wear, and these are soft tyres that get used hard. This suggests I've chosen some tyre pressures that work for me.

My suggestion regarding using a lower tyre pressure in this climate was due to the fact that slightly lower tyre pressures can aid traction in snow, but if you live somewhere that the roads are well looked after and snow isn't an issue, then disregard it.

Yeah, so what's the recommended pressure for them then? Note that air con and various other optional extras will increase the front axle loading - so what's right for a GTI with all the options won't be right for a basic 6n2, and certainly not on higher profile tyres.

A 195/50-15 will normally be suitable for a greater load than a 195/45-15, and if the OP really wants to know the exact pressure to run, then post up the original specs of the tyres fitted to the car from factory with the load index and pressures, along with the load index for the new tyres.

You can get away with varying pressures to a certain extent, but even a few PSI difference front to rear depending on how the car's suspension is set up can make big differences.

I am definitely not an expert in this field, but tyre and suspension related stuff interests me more than ICE and shiny wheels...

I'm sticking with 30 PSI all round or maybe even slightly less as I said.

Check the book that comes with the car. Gives you all the info you need. I can't see any reason for running more than 33/34 PSI. I've had a few different sized Volkswagens and 28-32 PSI seems pretty standard across the range.

I wouldn't bother rocking 40-44 PSI. You'll just run the centres of the tyre tread down faster than the rest of the tyre.

Tyre pressure is relevant to the vehicle and not the tyre size.

195/45R15 is standard on the 16v too
