Hi all,

I've had a 6n2 for 2 years now and my engine management light seems to be coming on more and more frequently. It flashed at me for 20 secs yesterday then stayed off, came to start car earlier today and it didn't start, was as if battery was flat! Turned engine off then tried restarting it and it started fine but engine management light was on. Turns out there are 4 faults which free vag-com found:

18010 - Power supply terminal 30: Voltage too low

P1602 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

16684 - Shareware Version. To decode all DTCs

P0300 - 35-10 - Please Register/Activate - Intermittent

16688 - Shareware Version. To decode all DTCs

P0304 - 35-10 - Please Register/Activate - Intermittent

16687 - Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected

P0303 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

Also, last time Engine Management light was on, the last 3 errors were the same (except it was cylinder 4 that had misfire detected)

Could someone please tell me what the 2 Shareware version error codes are and how to fix them.

Could it be that the car is in desperate need of a service (3yrs overdue) and / or cambelt (97,000 miles, never changed)

Not sure on engine code but control module p/n is 030 906 032 CE

It's a 1.0 MPI 8v 6n2

Hello,

Multiple misfires on cylinders 3 & 4. I'd bet your spark plugs have never been changed with the three year overdue service.

I'd recommend change all 4 spark plugs and an oil change too. I suspect fuel economy will also improve after this.

If you are working on car today, recommend removing, inspecting, and cleaning spark plugs and leads at both ends. This may temporarily help things. Post pictures of the spark plug ends if you can....

In fact, at 97k miles, I'd be tempted to stick a new set of ignition leads on too! They are not that expensive!

I would change leads but they're £50 from halfrauds and local motor factors is shut... And opie oils don't do them, :( but they do have the sparky's :-)

Ok, managed to remove 2 spark plugs, the HT's wouldn't come off the other 2. If plugs are numbered 1 to 4 left to right, i removed 3 and 4. The ends both look a little burnt (brown glaze, not rust) and are obviously not new (i don't mean they've been used on another car, just a long time on this one!)

Update: managed to remove all 4 spark plugs, they all look the same and I've cleaned HT's with some GT85. Oil not changed, neighbour (who was going to help me) said it was too cold and wet as it has to be done outside, no garage :(

Well done for doing that in the cold!

I suspect replacing all 4 spark plugs and a good clean of the HT leads will solve your problems. Remember to change the oil filter with the oil change.

Another good tip, especially in the winter, is to check the cabin pollen filter (scuttle tray). If it's clogged black with dust particles- replace it with a new one. It really helps to get optimum flow to the vents to help clear the screen! (circa £6). It's a little like trying to hoover a room with a blocked bag in the vacuum cleaner - unless you use a Dyson!

It's in the scuttle tray. Pull the two black plastic tabs at the front to release. Gently, lift upwards and forwards but do not apply too much force to it. Actually, wait till it's warmer as the plastic will be brittle in the cold now and has a high risk of snapping.

Check ebay for the plugs - sometimes cheaper....

eg: 290310404447 item number for 5 of the same NGK plug at £22.59 delivered.

Tbh, if I'm buying engine related products, I'll always use a reputable company because with eBay, you never know... And besides, I've already placed order with opie... Spend over £30 on products and use GIFTWHITE or GIFTBLACK to get free shipping, free air freshener and 2x 6" stickers in which ever colour code you chose :) and i needed some tyre shine stuff anyway so used that as an excuse to spend over £30.

Also, while I'm on about eBay, (off topic) what's the cheapest 8kK h7 55w hid kit you can find (ebay or elsewhere) and yes, i know 55w HID are illegal

One thing I've noticed since removing and re-installing plugs and leads is that through idle speed is noticeabley lower than before (same plugs btw) used to be about 820 rpm, its now low 600's feels like it wants to stall every time, it never has, just feels like it wants to

Whack those new plugs in, consider new leads, and squirt a generous amount of carb cleaner into the throttle body taking care to clean the butterfly at the same time.

Also check carefully for vacuum leaks or disconnected pipes especially the intake manifold.

Ok, I do it with engine off.

1. undo 2 bolts to the black plastic engine cover under lift up tabs

3. release HT leads from black cover (do not have to be completely removed, just pulled up so free floating)

2. firm pull upwards and pull off engine cover

4. note silver throttle body sitting underneath with butterfly valve.

5. generous blasts down throttle body - aim at black crud

6. squirt some on cloth and clean butterfly valve (do not scratch)

7. replace and restart car

(some people completely remove the throttle body, clean, and do a throttle body reset via VAG-COM)

Make sure all pipes reconnected when replacing the engine cover. Consider changing engine air filter (in the black engine cover as you've removed it anyway and it only costs about £15 from a motor factor/VW). Clean oil vapour deposits inside engine cover with Wynn's Carb cleaner and cloth.

I mean, engine thread, you have all info, indicator thread, you had the info...

Just been to halfrauds, they're fresh out of carb cleaner (as usual) but they said that brake cleaner is the same stuff in a different can. So, i bought some... My question is, is it really the same stuff because surely, you'd just add it onto the original packaging?

Just thought id ask some people who know what they're on about before squirting it into my TB.

This I do not know. Never used it in a throttle body.

I've labelled them with the same numbers as described earlier... 1 - 4, left to right.

Only got those 2 pics, was dark by the time i got the last 2 plugs out

Normal burning characteristics but noted they are old plugs.
