The Polo's of about this age (on the 9n/fabia chaiss) has a wiring fault in the boolid.

I take it you font have a boot popper on your remote? And is it just one of them weird electric boot releases?

If so then the washer pipe freezes and allows the pipe to split allowing water to leak into the main solonoid connector on the wiring loom. this corrodes quickly and doesnt allow power through to realse the boot lock. I just had this on the Fabia VRS I have - fixed by cutting the connectors off the wires and wiring them directly together.
