if it looks good but goes slow who cares if it looks crap but goes like a stabbed rat then who cares if it looks good and goes like stink then its a bonus but remember the better it looks the less you will want to drive it with the fear of recking it

its quicker than a 1.4 8v so its a "fast 1 litre" :p tbh very few polos are fast when you compare them to other cars

my polo is slow as fook when compared to some of the crazy cars I've owned ie a 1.2 turbo fiat cinqi or my impreza turbo but my polo is cooler and costs less when it breaks down

All about performance for me, but I wouldn't drive a total bag of shit either. Certainly not into spending crazy money on shiny wheels, unless I could prove they were both lighter and stronger than stock. I'm also yet to see a car with smoothed bumpers that looks better than it came out the factory.

Yes finally someone who talks sense, i never get the whole smooth car look, or lowering a car so much it can't get over a speed hump.

Definitely prefer performance to looks, although it is a bonus if it looks well.

I want to have an old piece of shit looking car with crazy power, that when i pull up next to a Subaru at the lights it leaves

at this age, it's looks for me.

if I had something powerful, with my lack of driving experience, i'd probably put it in a ditch somewhere in the first month.

(although, I've done 30k miles in less than 18 months since passing my test & I was on the road on a scooter for a year before that too and racked up over 10k on a 50cc hair-dryer)

if anything i've just made my polo feel fast and sound fast.

a fast car would be nice though, but thats my treat for when insurance is up next July.

I like having a rare car, something you dont see about alot.

The polo GT, polo GTi now the TT (yes i know it might not be rare but its a nicely modded one in my opinion)

I dont like driving cars that are standard so have to tinker. The polo GT i had i did plenty to improve performance and to make it look nice. polo GTi i just put a filter on as it was fast enough really and concentrated on the looks. I put a set of diecent coilovers on and it transformed its handling making it great to drive.

The TT looks great as it is, its already got 270bhp so fairly rapid but it needs something to improve the driving experience. It just gets to 60 without any effort! So a exhaust is on the list along with a few handling mods - uprated haldex controller etc.

I'm far more into performance than looks, mainly due to the old man's car. My car is completely stock, engine and otherwise, but shiney as buggery 80% of the year. So looks for me, purely because it's a 1043 and pointless doing anything with it.

When it comes to older 'wagens, performance above all.

My nextcar will look stock, but will be set up for track.

But my heart's with classic cars tbh, 60s GT / Tourer would be my choice, money no object.

My polo I had a 57i induction kit and it was stripped out, 1.4 8v is never going to be a fast car so didn't see the point in spending money on cams etc. Instead I concentrated on making it look good, but it did feel fast where it was so low.

My Ibiza GTi is going to be performance orientated, but I'm going to try and make it look good at the same time. So far its on coilovers, stage 1 airbox, dewipered, fire extinguisher etc. so a mix of both at the moment. Plans include some track style wheels, exhaust system, strut braces and uprated ARB's. Would also like bucket seats and harnesses, but they will be one of the last things to come.

for me it's just a case of what ever takes my fancy tbh, i do tend to make my car's faster but it's normally just because i like fucking about with car's and power tool's rather than having some kind of need for speed

i like to try and make my car's look better too but not in a fancy pants shinny shinny kinda way, just better than standard and normally a lot closer to the ground.

My cousin's currently restoring his BMW 2002 Tii (following the beautiful job he and his dad made of his '73 RS2000) and its gonna be a cracker,but the '60s was even better for those who love driving.

Old cars are so much more involving and challenging to drive,that they're fun in a way that no modern car can be. No matter how fast.

My Polo is considerably faster than my uncles '66 Lotus Cortina but his car is so much more fun. Equally,mine was more fun than a 306 2.0 16v even when it was in its stock state as a 1.3.

Combining a tuned engine with a light,basic old car and its direct (almost agricultural) fully mechanical controls is a total winner for getting fully connected with the car,but getting the balance right is all you need to have more fun at less speed than the dull,simulative,electronically governed fly-by-wire quick cars of today - which are faster than ever,but dont feel anything like it. The trend today seems to be to partially remove the driver from the responsibility and control of the car,which would be a horrific direction to take. Maybe the aim of making it easier to drive a car has simply got out of control?

Whatever. Simply put,the more you put in,the more you get out.

With todays cars being so easy to drive fast,its no wonder they aint exactly thrilling to drive,unless you're doing highly illegal speeds. And even then,rarely.

Most '60s sports cars weren't particularly quick,but given the choice of a 998cc Austin Healey Frogeye Sprite, or Audi TT RS, i know which one id rather drive.

And whilst the Sprite aint fast,it certainly aint pretty. Seriously? Hell yeah.

Enjoyable driving is being killed off,so enjoy it now whilst you still can - there's plenty of time to look pretty.

i can afford to buy something modern and fast,but they are almost too fast,to have fun you are almost always doing something illegal, as they do it too easily i want a raw drive,at reasonable speeds, something where every input is matched by the car.

i started with a mini ten years ago, 1000 cc of pure fun, it was not fast, but hell of a lot of fun. so now, i'm building a fairly rude 1300 on 40's which also isn't gonna be fast by todays standards, but its serious fun, i think i have always concentrated on making the engineering work better so home modifying has been the way forwards, there is a lot of satisfaction to be had from making something that works better or more elegantly,. so hey standard looking, so i don't get pulled, but tuned underneath for amusement value...

i'm with neil on this one... i'm not really a fan of pulling up next to someone in the same car as me. even though i drive a volkswagen, i like it to be a bit different.

i like my car to feel fast, doesn't necessarily have to be it. i just want to make sure everything is done properly on my car, whatever it is. if/when my exhaust goes, i might get a stainless system or whatever needs replacing, but i'm not going to 'improve performance' unless its something i feel would really benefit me, or needed doing. there's nothing worse than replacing a perfectly good part with one that's supposedly 'better' or 'cooler' only for it not to work properly.

i could go on, but basically for me i'd rather my car look good and be enjoyable to drive at sensible speeds than be a gorgeous car with no involvement or a ridiculously fast banger.

It is as far as me and the DVLA are concerned . ATM its only probably firing on 2.25 cylinders anyway, its fine

That's because its made for girls. And is the reason why so many people who drive Audis,drive the way they do.

Looks are a matter of opinion,your GT looked far better in mine. Facts are it was half the weight so only needed half the power to be as quick,but you didn't give it that. Fact is it was also far rarer. But opinion is what its all about,its your car,and if you think you've got it right then fair play.
