After hunting for many months now for a cheap Coupe Genesis. I have one. A note on a windscreen payed off in the end with a Polo in my home town of Eastbourne.

So now I have project Genesis.

I have a Genesis Coupe 1.0 4 speed in burgandy(indian red offical I think)

I payed a grand sum of £240 for her.

5 months tax no mot.

Failed on emissions and rear brake imbalance. Now I reckon I can fix these myself.

Not 100% sure what to do about the emisssions so any advice welcomed.

The rear brakes I can do no problems.

Other faults include :

looks like petrol gauge may not be working and temp gauge not working.

Bottom of drivers door rotten.

Drivers seat not folding.

Good points.

petrol tank has been replaced along with the head gasket and cambelt

( I have some hefty garage bills for these from the previous owners)

Heater works

drives like a little go cart ( my daily car is a passat saloon 20v sport)

oddly has a tow bar.

My little coupe is my shoe string project coupe so any advice or cheap/free bits are very welcome.

I am so glad to have a MK3 coupe again must get myself a club polo sticker.

How much info did you get re: emissions? CO or HC? Both out? A lot, or just slightly? Could be as simple as ensuring the car is nice and warm and had a good run, or replacing a sensor or two, or it might need an engine rebuild.

For £240 you can't go wrong, Get some pics up. As for the "bad bits" they don't sound to bad.

Get your hands on a haynes manual, It's stupid not to have one as they explain a lot of tasks very well that may seem daunting and complicated at first site.

The haynes manual will explain how to sort out the rear drum brakes, they are very simple as I'm sure you know.

The emissions problem will probably be easiest to solve hopefully, depending if its a late spec car, these engines have pretty lenient regulations when it comes to CO levels etc.

When i bought my first car (mk3 1992, so the slacker regulations) it had also failed on the emission's test. I thoroughly cleaned the throttle-body, changed the blue temp sender, (The one that relay's coolant temp levels to the ECU, contributing to fuel mixture whilst running) and checked that the lambda probe was relaying the correct figures (which it was not).

It later passed its re-test. As for the rotten door i would think about replacing the whole thing instead of patching it up, takes a lot less time.

And you will more than likely have a snapped cable in the drivers side seat, You'll figure it out.

Its emissions failure was as follows..

fast idle co% fail 0.459 a pass is 0.30 hc was under

second idle test 0.615 hc was under

lambda on both tests was under.

and yes pics to follow as I bought it home in the dark so pics up in the morning.

Right it's not burning oil then, it's purely fuelling related. There's no mixture adjustment on these, all controlled by lambda once warm and under part load conditions. I'd clean everything as advised above, and also as advised it's probably the ecu temp sender.

Cleaned it twice today proper dirty. Gave it a hoover.Found some useable wiper blades in the garage, stuck them on. Glove box was not shutting so fixed hinge, all good . Sprayed some wd40 on the drivers side window winder internals, bit smoother now. Took off passenger side mirror and decided its beyond fixing so need a replacement. Fitted a sterio, didnt work :(.

Then did some petrol filler cleaning.

The went looking for some shiny inserts for my door handles but I must have used them on a previous car, so anyone have any spare?

Then it rained and rained so could not finish off the flap or polish the coupe.

Found my old tinted repeaters too. Fitting tomorrow.

Tinted repeaters fitted.

About a litre of oil removed from engine now sitting at max!!!

Redex poured into injection, much better now.

Air filter lid re-sprayed.

Blue sensor ordered from Vw.

Golde sunroof winder fitted.

Brakes tomorrow.

I was starting to think about painting but might just hold out for that door.:(

Changed water sensor today and guess what the water temp on the dash now works!

Had a look at the brakes today aswell and gave them some adjustment hopefully all ok for the mot.

Scraped off some 15 year old stickers from the boot glass so all clear now.

Found out why the sunroof was not closing properly (picture of broken part below)

Tidied up the engine bay a little, but more work to be done.

so just the fuel gauge and sunroof to sort now but going to book a mot over the next couple of days.

After today my 6 year old little girl asked me if I was a wheeler dealer like on tv....I laughed

Yeah this is my third one.

They are great little cars drive like go carts, I keep going back to them and I have had about 12 vw's

this car is so like mine haha; same model, same colour, bottom of the door's rusty (though not as bad thankfully), driver's seat doesn't fold (doesn't really need to now the back seats are out), petrol gauge seems a bit dodgey as it takes a while to go up to the actual level it should be at, temperature gauge does actually work on mine but for a while i didn't think it did; it's the engine taking ages to warm up that's doing it for me, sunroof bits are broken exactly the same, so i just took them off along with that wind deflector that they attach to, doesn't really matter much. repainted my air filter cover the same too

Yeah I think it would have been a gonner otherwise. Its not had a lot of actual owner love over the years, although lots of garage receipts.

I am going to get it back to its former glory and as soon as its moted its going to be economical work car(unless a G40 falls in its bay)

After putting £20 of petrol in today I found that the fuel gauge does actually work it must have been so low in the tank it did not even register.

Then I played around with the sterio finding that the fuse on the back had 2 positions non and vw, once round the correct way it sprang into life, then I found the speakers are not exactly going to win any sound offs.!!!

my speakers were completely shot. took the grilles off and the cones of the speakers were completely disintegrated, there was just some flakey little shards of cone lying around and lots of dust. binned them and ran wire from the connections down and back past the seats and whacked some old hi-fi speakers in the rear footwells behind the front seats. i did it just for a laugh originally and to see if my new stereo functioned properly, but after a few months they're still there as they sound really good and were free haha, with my back seats out it doesn't interfere with passengers either, they're nicely out of the way. look daft though!

Filled up with petrol today and going to see how many miles I can get out of a tank!

And as far as the speakers go I think some sony's are best I stuck some in my old lhd mk2 gti which had the same problem, I also have some JBL 6x9 which could be cheaky...

This cars really similar to mine! K-reg, Genesis, same colour I also had the problem, with the sun roof wind deflector arms, I treated the rust on the to give me a (somewhat) solid base, and the drilled them out and reattached them to the deflector with split pins :p that was almost a year ago and theyve still held!!
