Hey guys, looking to replace my 8 inch sub as i've blown it up, the speaker cone actually shattered....

and because i have a little sub+amp box, like all in 1, and it's now discontinued i have to get a totally different sub, so before anything? will it all be the same wiring to the amp etc?

and now i'm looking at two subs, i've heard kicker is better but the spec doesn't seem as good, even though it's more expensive?

what'd be the best out of these:

i,d say jbl prox i swear by them or if I'm after high end stuff for show cars focal i always use

Whatever you get you need to set it up right!! Subs dont shatter cones like this unless you have:

a) got the gain waaaaaay too high, or,

b) the low pass filter is too high.

Having the gain too high is pretty obvious, your sending the wrong thing to the cones and sub decides it doesnt like it so blows up! Having the low pass filter is a bit more difficult, this means that the signal you're sending the sub is going too high at points. The problem with this is the sub is trying to do too much at once (i.e. process too varied a range of notes at once). There is a good guide to setting up subs/amps on here somewhere, may be in the FAQ's. If you set it up right then you wont blow up your lovely new sub and it will sound alot better!! Remember volume isnt everything, a well set up sub will sound infinitely better than a sub with the gain and low pass filter whacked right up so it booms and bellows!!

edit: with 8" subs you also have to watch whether they are free air or enclosure type. For example the autobahn one suggested by luke mc above is free air. This basically means it doesnt need a box so should be fitted to something like a reinforced parcel shelf. I used to have a 8" kicker sub and it was awesome! Unless REALLY well set up and boxed (and we're talking advanced box design and building down to the cubic mm!) you're never gunna get massive bass out of an 8" sub. These are for the low end slightly below what you will get out of say a 6" component but not as low as a 10/12" sub. Do you know what amp you will be running it off yet?

Yeahh well when i first fitted the sub it wasn't working, so i messed around with the headunit settings, but left the gain really high cause it wasn't working before. Then when i got it working on the headunit i was like 'ahhh i'll turn the gain down when i stop....oh maybe next time.. etcetc.'

and yeah >< it broke

i have that vibe sub but mines running from a jl audio amp it sounds awesome surprises alot of people :-D

i remember being at the local 'hang' and like all these chavvy kids laughing at it, blared some Datsik/Excision they were like wtf!!!!

i've used kicker and jbl in the past, the kicker subs to me seem to have a stronger better sound quality to them while the jbl subs seem to push out higher volumes but sound a bit thinner and punchier

so go kicker of you want quality and use jbl if you want quantity

Id agree with this! I've got a 12" in my car but its in a nice small sealed box and got it set up for quality not quantity, gives a nice tight sound then :)

If you want any help setting it up give me a shout bud, I'm only about 20 mins away from bath! :)

i had a Kicker Comp 12(dont know the model, never took out of the box), played against my mates JBL GT5-12

The GT5 out played the kicker by a long way, in clarity, and bass

The GT5 makes stuff move across the dash in his car, shifts the magic trees about and throws stuff off the parcel shelf
