any tips for where it is and how to get to it to clean it? i heard its part of the throttle body and is called something else but i cant remember the name

the problem is it dont idle at 1000 (normaly 800) unless i rev it (stationary) and when i slow down and change from 3rd to 2nd (example) the revs drop to 400 ish then go up, sometimes stalling while moving as they go down so low.

ok stripped it apart and gave it a clean and I'm happy to say all the running problems it had before are gone, back to a normal idle (pretty much, still rough but it needs to be run in acording to the link provided)

suprising that it worked at all tbh, it was unimaginably dirty, i got covered lol. got a few pics just for referance to others with this problem. i can write a proper tutorial if you want it in the FAQ or something

How to

started from taking the air filter off, easy enough to do without any help realy, 1 screw to undo on left, followed by the 4 screws with 1-4 next to them, then a pipe under the box onthe left

before the clean (check idle speed on right side)

then to cleaning

and now it idle's nicely

not sure where yours is located but when you do find it- use carb cleaner to flush it through

I'm assuming what you want to clean is the throttle body. Its pretty easy to get to, you just have to remove the air filter. Then the unit itself I believe is held down with 4 bolts (never actually removed mine)

I've also recently had problems with the engine revving quite low, as it seems a lot of people here have. For me, I've changed my HT leads and its helped a bit to make things more stable. At the weekend I'll also change the spark plugs to hopefully correct things.

I've got new spark plugs sitting next to me, just need to get around to changing them. bosch super 4's, 12 quid on halfords trade :p as for the HT leads i may do them too if they arnt too much and then do the clean out

thanks for the guides, dont look too hard but gonna need a dremel set, been meaning to get one for a few case mods on my xbox :)

edit: hmm, maybe i wont need ne looking at the 1st cleaning tut with the golf. will have to look into it me thinks :)

I paid £30 for some pretty standard HT leads from Halfords at the weekend. Just be careful with them, they can be broken with relative ease!

Ahh not too pricey, i get stuff realy cheap on trade so i might look at other brands too. Spark plugs should have been 20 quid and i got a 107 quid bosch battery for 65 :p

There isn't an idle valve on the 6N - Just follow the advice for cleaning throttle body.

If it doesn't misfire, I don't think that new HT leads will make much difference.

Heh I bought those spark plugs a few weeks back!

One had been taken out of the packet to check the size though so he gave them to me for £9.99

also GSF and Euro car pars will do the HT leads for cheaper than halfords....however unless you damage the leads when you change the spark plugs there isn't much point in changing them (unless they're fooked anyway)

yea i know theres not i just had mental block when i wrote it :p and it doesnt realy missfire but the revs do fluctuate when its idle'ing so if the clean up dont sort things and spark plugs dont either then ill probs change them aswell
