Hi, I am new to the forum so please don't be too hard on me. I tried a search on EGRs but no luck I am afraid so apologies if this has been discussed before. I have a Fabia 1.4 16v 100bhp 2001 model which is a bit lacking in power and occasionally cuts out when driving. Vag-com is advising that the EGR is not matched to the car. I have had the throttle body off and cleaned it, thereafter I matched this to the car with no difficulties but I am not sure if there is a EGR process, does anyone know? I have removed the EGR a while back and cleaned it, at the time I didn't think it was working but I managed to get the piston moving a bit and re-fitted it as I didn't have another to try. When I started to get this latest fault code my first tought was to just get another one but that seems to be easier said than done. They are about £130 new and second hand has proved quite hard to track down. I am wondering if the car actually needs it, is a second hand one a good idea or should I bite the bullet and get a new one? All advice greatly appreciated :-D

I'm not sure if theres a process on having the EGR reset process. I had it on the polo 16v AFH and i removed it and blanked up the holes. My 20vt mk4 golf is another one whereby i removed the EGR system completely and had a blanking plate made up to block it off completely.

Its just a way for the car to maintain being more greener by re-cycling some of the exhuast gas back into the intake...do you have the exact fault code from vag com?

The EGR on the Fabia has an electrical connection to th e top and I wondered if I just removed it and blanked off the engine block if it would maybe throw an engine management light? Do you know if the EGR is the same on the Polo you are describing or would I need to look at one around the same age as mine, attached hopefully. Scrapyards don't seem to have a clue, so I am now carrying a picture about with me. Also what's the thinking on blanking EGRs, does it improve performance, are there ay dangers?

i had same problem with my old astra! i took it in and they said its not really needed so i just left it, the light on the dash stayed on so i covered it with black tape for a while till i crashed it

I know you'll have to perform an output test on the EGR system and see how the engine runs with the EGR valve disconnected- if no difference but light stays on, use VAG com to alter the values so you blank it out and stop the light coming on, i.e. shut down the EGR.

I'm also guessing that if the electrical valve was at fault, you'd get codes like:

Perhaps try running the engine adaptions and throttle adaptions and see if that clears the EGR problem.

you may wish to run the EGR with the ports blocked to see if it actually is the EGR! :)

Thanks for the replies, I will work my way through the links and see what I can come up with. The picture of the EGR is just one like mine and I never really checked the part number to see if it's correct, should get the correct one, which will be useful from the info you've given though, so thanks again. My engine code is AUB, it's the 100 bhp engine 1.4 16v. Also I will try to post up the answer on here when i find it in case it would be of help to others

i'd recommend you try the following in this order:

1.) perform an output test on the EGR.

2.) failing that- adapt the engine, throttle body and EGR through Vag Com.

3.) disconnect the EGR valve from the engine and blank the hole up then reattach the EGR valve so no gas goes through it- this will tell you if the EGR is actually at fault.

4.) you now have the part number for your EGR and its the same as the 2001 polo with AUB engine- two releases of the valve came out that year- once fitted- you'll have to adapt it if it doesnt do so itself.

5.) good luck :-D
