My 1991 GT Hatchback

Featured Replies

Good shout on the standard springs and shocks. I'm yet to go in ANY lowered GT that doesnt drive and ride like a horse and cart.

Worst decision i ever made was putting mine on a 'TA Technix' kit from PhilJ. Was told because its only 40/40 it would be a good ride. LOL @ that statement is all I've got to say in response.

Hate Breadvans with a passion... love this one though. Jon did it proud.

true story bro...

but your an immature idiot.

Regards.

Moving on, You mentioned the Weitec kit Martin, how did it drive on that kit as oppose to TA?

  • Author

Jay, I have only run the car with the Weitec kit on the rear with TA Technix upfront. Suspension will be stock as of next week as I plan to sell the car soon. The rear end felt a lot softer than the TA Technix that came off.

My brother runs the Weitec full kit on his mk2 and it's lovely, smooth and a hell of a lot softer than TA Technix.

Car is currently in the garage for MOT and repair work:

  • New front NS shock absorber
  • New Front NS wheel bearing

Both above were replaced brand new in February which is a tad worrying. Shock absorber will be going back to GSF for a refund. Wheel bearings I had for a couple of years and were brand new obviously but not sure how it's fucked already.

  • New NS outer CV joint
  • A small amount of welding on a seatbelt mount.

Alongside that they will be fitting new stock rear wheel bearings, rear dampers and springs so all being well, it should drive like a brand new car!

Since january it's had:

Brand new shocks, springs and wheel bearings, 2 rear tyres fitted in Jan (fronts were new in November). new ECU temp sender and the rest of the parts above.

The car will be for sale in the coming months I think.

Got the car back 2 weeks ago now, garage had it for about 4 days in the end due to other cars taking up their 'priorities'.

Turns out the shock insert was fine, I did tell them it was only fitted 4 weeks before! Odd about the front wheel bearing though, that was also fitted 4 weeks before too.

So the garage fitted new outer CV joint and gaitor, NS front wheel bearing, rear shocks and springs - Sachs Super Tourer items from ECP and new rear wheel bearings.

Car is very nice to drive now, original height however with the GT Coupe wheels/tyres the front has mroe arch gap than standard due to the 165/65's as opposed to the 155/70's the standard GT Hatchbacks came with.

So yeah, I have already mentioned this in the post above but in the last couple of months the car has got new wheel bearings, new shock absorbers and new springs all round along with new front top mounts too.

Quick picture - will give it a clean and get some better snaps up soon.

2013 will see a few modifications. Won't go into too much detail as of yet but think along the lines of Bilstein, H&R/Weitec, Schrick, Powerflex etc and you'll be close!

It was at BVF & the Polo Show last year & the Polo Show this year, it doesn't really stand out as it's filthy and I rarely clean it!

Will be 3f, yes :)

aww Jon, i'd love to however I couldn't justify it. Circumstances are changing (for the better) and I won't need to rely on a car for everyday activites i'm hoping so i'm going to fettle the GT and go from there.

Ah right

I was too busy drinking and throwing that nurf about...

So is the plan a cammed 3F then? Keeping the injection?

Yes, Schrick 268/268 with a ported head too! I have both already, just need to take her off road for a week or two.

Failed the MOT today. CV boot and Rear exhaust bracketry so nothing OTT. Needs a retest soon as well as the work being done!

Now with a years MOT :)

Turned out that it also failed the first time on lack of side repeaters in the wings. A bit of speaker wire, tacky side repeaters & sticky pads got me through the retest

Time to replace the lambda, fit a straight thru centre pipe & Pipercross 'induction kit' (hate that phrase)

How come you didn't have side repeaters? More importantly how did you miss that before going the first time? :S

The repeater holes have been welded up haven't they?

Its easy to miss stuff. My dads van went for its MOT with no rear number plate once. I was spraying the back and forgot to put it back on. He jumped in without checking

Previous owner had some new wings fitted & painted before I owned it and they came without repeater holes from VW.

It did fail the first test this time round - he told me it would be OK for the retest however when I booked the retest he was booking me in todrill the lovely wings & stick some repeaters in.

Technically, the style of the front & rear indicators mean that you can see the indicators from the side. Last two MOT tests have been fine, this tester had other ideas.

Was gonna say, the front indicators on these have been designed so that they can be seen from the side!

New plates and surrounds arrived over the last few days.

Word of warning, don't beep at the car in front when they decide to chuck their rubbish out of their window at traffic lights. Dickhead decided to take off from the lights then chuck his brakes on meaning my numberplate got cracked by his towball. Good excuse for new plates though  always wanted new plates but couldn't justify them.

It's been a long time coming but i'm now living and working back in Oxford which means I cycle to work and the Polo will be treated to a few modifications... I had to commute from Oxford to Bristol for about 6 weeks so I was using a mates A4 and my Polo was uninsured as I transferred the policy across.

Next week i'm hoping to transfer the insurance back to the GT for some 3F smiles :ninja:

Mods/upgrades will be:

New TCA's fitted with powerflex polybuhes - bought

New Febi Bilstein top mounts

Bilstein B6 font dampers with Weitec -60mm springs - bought

Rear height adjustable Weitec dampers and springs - bought

Homebrew oil temp gauge - bought and need to construct

Possibly a new interior

Pipercross cone filter - bought

Straight through centre pipe - bought

Stainless backbox at a later date - bought

Can't wait to carry out some decent changes to the little breadvan!
