Hopefully its nice and flush to the body, last thing you want is debris from under the carpet falling into the mechanism and jamming something! Only saying this as i removed my gaiter to check on a replacement and got lazy and didnt clip all sides in and managed to have a pebble jam in and cause me a few issues!!

yeah i understand but like i say there is carpet covering the hole thats tucked under the original carpet about 1"
