I've always been under the impression that the polo engines of the MK4 range were 1.4 8v, 1.4 16v 1.6 8v (75bhp) and 1.6 16v (100bhp)

However I've just bought a (1996) MK4 Polo Saloon 1.6L and some say that the 1.6 in the saloon is a 100BHP engine.. does anyone have the definitive answer?

You are correct the saloon 1.6 is 100bhp

youre thinking mk4 hatchbacks (6n)

classics & estates mk4 shape are (6k/6kv) a mix of mk4 polo and mk3 golf.. same as the mk2 caddy van.. seat mk2 ibiza and cordoba.

they done a 1.6 75hp and a bigger block 100bhp. my estate is a 2000 model with the 100bhp engine.. think the earlier models (with the 6n style dash) are 75hp and the later spec dash (mk5 6n2) are 100bhp.

not sure when the change over was so i maybe wrong.

The saloon is not a Polo its a Seat Cordoba,just wears the Polo badge. The engine bay is Golf metalwork,so the car is engineered to accept the tall block engine.

Both the 75bhp 1.6 8v and the 100bhp 1.6 8v were fitted to that car, they are two completely different engines. The 75bhp version has the exhaust manifold on the front and the spark plugs on the back. The 100bhp version has these the other way around.
