Hi all, 1st post, going to pick up a mk2 saturday and just wanted to ask a couple Q's if someone wouldnt mind.

I live on the isle of wight and our roads are shocking! Just wondering how much clearence underneath there is with a 60mm drop? And wheres the best place to get the springs? Cant really afford more than 150 quid, will this get me lowered shocks too? if not, whats the problem running standad shocks?

Other thing was i wanted to run ats classics. I dont want to roll the arches or anything, so was wondering what the widest i can get under standad arches with the 60mm drop, and what offset on 13" please.

Any help would be much appreciated.

EDIT : Just seen the price of a new set of ats's Anything cheap anyone could recommend, preferably with a offset that will allow a wider wheel.

Second hand ats's?

You will get a -60mm drop for that money (see philj in the traders sub forum). They are cheap, but the ride I VERY stiff. If your roads are bad, you will not enjoy driving your car. Either save up for an h&r cup kit (apparently much softer) or get 40mm drop springs and use your standard shocks. You could maybe chop out a coil from the spring and get around a 50mm drop. I haven't done this myself, so can't reay advise it, but it has been done. You could then get some fk lowering top mounts (£30 from the fk site) for the front which will give you a further 10-15mm. However, i'm not sure how long your shocks will last.

Someone should be along to tell me I'm totally wrong in a bit. I'm possibly going to run that set up myself however, so any input is welcome

Thanks for the reply, do you know what size and offsets ill need for ats? DOnt mind bending the lip back a bit but dont want to go tubbing. Stiff ride wouldnt be such a good thing >_< hahaWhats te going rate for the h&r kit?

Your best bet is to look at the jackson tuning section on here :) he'll sort you out with some cheap suspension.

Wheels can be had for under £100 as long as you're willing to put some time/effort in refurbing them :)

Fraid not mate, depends on the size you get. Also tyre size and stuff. Personally I'm not up on these things. I tend to stick to vw wheels.

H&R is about £550 :-0

I ran -60 and had no clearance issues. Jut make sure your exhaust is twisted and mounted right up properly, they can drop a bit low. However, I cant speak for your situation as I don't know the roads. Any springs should do really, though concentrically wound ones are apparently best. Uprated shocks are hard to come by on their own though.

Cheers guys, well 550 is about 5x over my budget >_< But does anyine know where i could get a set of uprated shocks? Either seperatly or with springs but under 150 quid really. Well, id need at least 4 - 5inches of clearnce i guess if that helps.

As mentioned, philj on here does them. Have a look in the for sale section. But in the end, you get what you pay for. Cheap kits will give harsh rides.

What I have described above is possiblly your best bet cost and low wise. But as I have said, I can't garauntee the life time of the components

Found the Phil J Kit you meant i think? http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=93726 little way down that page, £120 dosnte seem to bad to me, to be fair, a small light car over here wont ride well as it is so a stiffer ride i can live with Lol! Next up would be the wheels, would love to go wide but cant justify the cost of going to the mainland to get them rolled, petrol money and silly money on the ferry etc etc, soon adds up. Did you have much space betweem the wheel and arch when yours was 60/60? If not any reallly low offset polo steels that could be banded wider but still fit with maybe the arch lip beaten back?

You can use wobble bolts to get mini wheels to fit.

When mine was low, I had 6" wheels, et38 offset (standard vw) I have some steels that ate et45 on ATM. To get the alloys to fit though, I had the rear arches rolled. However, I had 14" wheels, and too bigger tyres tbh. They rubbed on the front arch on full lock and have fucked the arches. But if you had 13s with low pros and the side wall flush with the wheel lip, obviously you'd have no problems

Me thinks thats the way I'm going to go. That guy in the link was running 145 with a 60 profile, so maybe a 135 with 60 profile will give me streatch extra clearance and i could still beat back the inner lip to get even more room just incase. Just started a new thread cz i can find the bolts but cant find the rings anywhere FFS :L Best I've found on the tinterweb was someone advising to get a size larger (Wheel side) and lathe the plastic down to suit, but dont really fancy the hassle tbh.
