Nice to see a chevette being restored and brought back to life.

I have a massive car crush on these little cars as when I was younger my dad used to rally one.

This fueled my Love for rallying and rear wheel drive vauxhall/Opels. I did my 1st rally in a Chevette

I then moved to polos as they are cheaper to maintain. but recently restored my dads old rally car and have been rallying it whilst I got round to getting a polo built.

heg i am only slightly envious of you... honestly

mate i would happily donate both my testicles for any of those cars, i'd love a manta A one day i think they've got a slightly muscle carness to them styling wise. i think i swa the black GTE in an old for sale add when i was looking for one a bit back, was it up on retro rides by any chance?

just yes 8-)

Yes I sold the black GTE back in 2006, she went o Ireland in the end. Ye I love my manta A. I'm currently rebuilding her with the plans of the C20 LET turbo going in it.

finally got some done on this, for what seems like months i've been cutting out and replacing shitty metal all around the sill so i had some thing to weld the new sill cover too, and replacing most of the inner sill which had disintegrated. finally got the new sill skin on, it still needs tidying up and a skim of filler over it but at least it's solid again.

the left overs of the old sill and all the rust i dug out

IMAG0172.jpg

finally got to drive it for the first time too although it was only off the garden so i could clean up under it. it turns out that theres a lot of air in the breaks as they need pumping to work but i'll be giving them an over haul any way

its got a couple of strange running issues too, it needs the choke one about a quarter for it to run properly otherwise its struggle to tick over and cuts out when rev'ed. another one is that it won't spark some times unless i run a live straight to the coil but then other times it won't need this, if any one knows these cars and has any idea what ether could be any advice would be very much appreciated

what is this shit? Is it a wind up?

Text me please shabba I have no phone numbers and plan to visit

Finally a little progress to report. Found out the running issue is a ballast resister breaking down which won't be an issues as I'm swapping to 12v coil and electronic ignition...

Which brings me to what I've been up to tonight. This is my dizzy after fitting a accuspark electronic ignition kit

The bits that are going in the bin

IMAG1279.jpg

Also to go with this I have a uprated coil

IMAG1277.jpg

So that's it, a pretty dull update. Things need to start moving on this soon tho as I need to have this on the road come April really, I just need to invest in another car cover so I can get it down here and get the body work finished and the brakes over hauled

Thanks to shaun for messaging me and pointing out that this coil can cause fires when fitted with this ignition set up :lol:

LOL

Loving this as much as all you are cars Guy... lookin.forward to seeing this progress but most of all seein the end product and what you decide to do.with it! U check for vac leaks with dodgy idle/cut out... know on my mk1 polo it had a vac leak and had similar symptoms...

He was at mine the other week so don't think he has burnt to death or owt Ben

Cheers ad i'll give it a good going over once I get it back home

LOL fires are over rated.... ask Saf :ninja:

Infact not seen Saf on here in ages hmm.....

Fires arnt over rated! Not when youve just done the fuel pump which is in the engine bay on my coupe s

Would have made a cool picture, but i was too busy ripping off the parts that were on fire off with a screwdriver! Wouldnt want anyone on here to experience the same!

Its quite funny looking back at it, long story short use a ballast type 12v coil with one of these setups!

Put an xe in it! That will be an awsome car!

P1210062.jpg

That is beautful! Banded steels look so cool

You'd know

pic above hasn't even got any

You keeping this then pal?

  • Author

Yep this is probably going to be the only thing keeping me sane over the summer

Got a little one on the way so had to buy a sensible daily (focus tdi  ), the polo is coming off the road for a major overhaul which I wanna take my time with and get it to a standard it deserves. So this is going to be put on the road and used as a cheap way to get my old skool fix. Just plan on getting it as low as possible and pimping it about for a bit, maybe slap the cups on it if I can get them to fit

Haha i was just reading through this topic and this came up, my old mk3 polo. i miss that car :-(
