6n2 gearbox

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I'm so confused :(

I've just had a gearbox fitted on my polo 6n2, the etd gearbox.

All the gears are fine except 2nd and reverse which seem stiff, it goes into gear but you really have to force it. However it doesn't crunch. Is there anyway adjustment or anything?

I got the gearbox out of a low mileage car and I'm worried it's no good :(

Thanks guys

I'm having the same problem too with my 1.4 V reg polo (not sure which version that is). Reverse, 1st and 2nd are a real pain to select. I had a garage take a look yesterday and they changed the clutch cable, 30 miles later and it's nearly impossible to drive again! I'm not sure if this is related (would be interested if Jamie_polo noticed the same) but a few days before things started getting bad i noticed a rattle had developed that seems to come from the gear stick linkage further toward the engine.

Please, has anyone has any ideas?

Same with my 6n2. I was considering changing the gearbox oil, maybe this will help?

A more informed view would be very helpful :)

if it's a cable change 'box, there's some adjustment in the linkage to get it to go into reverse a bit better, bad adjustment will make it difficult to engage the right gear.

There's also some adjustment in the gearbox, but that requires removal, splitting and adjustment of the mountings to get them to engage correctly - special tools and probably dealer only job (I can do most of the jobs, I don't have the tool to do this one - might get it though)

I've been on the phone to a VW specialist this morning, they're pretty certain that the pedal box is cracked. Steering wheel has to come out to see it! Well, they say it's six hours work and £280 of surgery on my wallet but what the hell i need the car :(

I'll update you all when i get it back on Monday!

Hello Jamie,

If you didn't have this problem with your old gearbox, I wouldn't think that it is a fault of the clutch linkage in your case.

It sounds very much to me as if the gear linkage is out of adjustment, if this is the case, whoever fitted the box should be able to sort that for you.

regards.

I'm also guessing that it could be the pedal box, same happened to my sisters 6n2 and she had touble selecting gears, she took it to a local garage who adjusted the clutch cable and it seemed ok for a few miles. Then i got my mechanic mate to have a look and he said there was a crack in the pedal box.. !!! took ages to do but problem sorted.. !!

Well I had a call today from the garage and my car's fixed. :) So they say, i dont get it back till tomorrow morning. They found the pedal box was craked and it took six hours all in, and that's at a real VW specialist! So yeah i'll see how it behaves tomorrow and report back.

same problem on mine all gears except 5th just been out n had me head up the footwell cant see a crack in the pedal box or any movment to suggest there is a crack I've tryed adjusting the clutch cable made no difference just made the biting point awfull dont know what to do know?

nothing to do with the oil

I changed the pedal box and cable made no difference so i fitted new clutch, cleaned and lubricated the release lever shaft which sorted it

Well after i had my pedal box repaired at a vw specialist my clutch and gear changes work just fine... I still have a noisy rattle from the exhaust at low revs, poor idle, noisy tappets and a flat spot about 2,000 rpm to top it off!

god this all sounds very serious! I've had problems recently...started with a heavy groany clutch, garage said i need a new clutch so its going in monday morning :) hoping this sorts the probs beacuse at low revs the car really struggles to go into gear, very odd having only done 43k but hey ho! I'm praying to god that it isnt the gear box, could it also be my pedal box? thanks all
