I'm one of the unlucky ones who has manual windows but I have a problem with my driver's side.

On the way down, no problems, glides smoothly and all is well. Trying to put it back up can sometimes take both hands on the handle due to it being extremely stiff. Can anyone shed any light on why it would be soo stiff to wind up when it is fine winding down

hi mate, the same happened on my girlfriends polo, take the door panel of, peel back the soundproofing and you will probably find that the cables on your window mechanism are shredded.. if they are, then its a case of replacing it.. (bout £10 from a scrappy)

if the cables seem okay, then spray some lube over the moving parts of the mechanism.

vdub - thanks for the information :) if the weather holds out tomorrow, I will take a peak at it then.

Krash - as vdub quoted, it is just extremely stiff putting it back up, so does seem like it's in the runners as it winds down fine, its just going up.

If its being pushed up unevenly,then it can be being wedged into the runners. When its going down its released from this. To find out,hold the glass and push towards the upper seat belt mount near your shoulder. This keeps the window upright and should make it raise more easily. If so,you know the glass is dragging in the front channel,causing it to wedge.

It can be a problem with various 'triangle' windows,not just Polos. Pre-94 Polo windows and most rear door windows are square thanks to a fixed quarterlight,so are held stable,and dont have the problem.
