weighing in after breaking

Featured Replies

Basically I'm just about to finish stripping my old polo and will obviously be left with a very bare shell.

My question is this- how do i get rid of the shell when its fully stripped??

I've heard people saying they're going to weigh it in, but will they pick it up with no wheels etc.? and do you weigh it in with a scrap metal merchant or auto scrap yard? if with a scrap metal merchant will they give me the certificate of destruction for the dvla?

Thanks in advance for any help! (and sorry if this is in the wrong section)

Dan :)

everything regarding scrapping a car has changed recently. You used to be able to declare it "personally scrapped" on the logbook and send it to the DVLA then you could take the shell to any scrap metal place. Now though, you can only get the car officially declared scrapped at an Authorised treatment facility (ATF) i think. If you just take it to a normal scrap place they will obviously take it,but probably can't issue a certificate of destruction so you will be responsible for it forever!

I work in a scrapyard buddy what you want to do is drain it of all fuel so it's not a risk to the yard where you weigh it in they then should issue you with a vechile dispoble certificate depending on the yard you go to , bit of advice tho if you want a good price for the shell if you have any old steel , brake discs , steel wheels , engine blocks etc put all them inside the car as this drives the weight up . We have been getting 225 a car at the moment ( bigger cars then polo's obv ) prices of scrap are shooting through the roof. I weighed 50 scrap alloys wheels & a load of mixed alloy & engine blocks in yesterday came out with 603 quid if the alloy was clean with no rubber bushes , steel bolts etc I would of came out with a 1000 quid cash but cleaning to that scale does take a lot of time ! Hope this helps

stripped my polo recently and took it to EMR they wouldn't have it without wheels and the sorted out the destruction doodah i got a ton for it job done

Just weighed in a mk3 bare shell today, got £36 for it.

Theres a local scrappy near me but for cars only and if i took it to them I'm guessing they would sort me out a certificate of destruction surely?

i dont know for sure but i think if you got someone to pick it up on the back of a truck, and its only a shell, they'll probably just take it off your hands, as in its doing you a favour by disposing of it but if you can get it there, you'll be able to weigh it, i had a 205 bare shell and i chopped it into 5 or 6 pieces i think it was, to put it in the back of the van, and with a few other bits we only got £28!! wasnt worth cutting it up lol

Can you get a C.O.D. with just a V5C and a few bits of metal?

The problem with that is, you won't get a C.O.D, so will have to sorn the car every year!

I forgot to ask last time i went what the minimum bits of the car they required to issue a C.O.D

Nice one cheers again guys! Looks like I'm either trailering it there or chopping it into bits!

Martin- do you live off fishponds road bud? I'm moving next Saturday into a flat on fishponds road!

Thanks again! Dan

If you've got a SIMS near you, there's no real point taking it anywhere else. Don't forget your logbook though.

i drove mine to its death

I do mate! PM me your address, will see if you're near!

i drove mine to its death

I did that with my old blue transit, after taking all the high security locks off it.

Then forgot to take the keys out before they picked it up with the grab

sad times fortunately it had a little bit of mot and tax so i swapped the insurance over and took it for its last ride :( i had been driving my valver for a few weeks by then i remember getting in it and thinking "OMG THIS THING IS DANGEROUS HOW ON EARTH WAS I DRIVING THIS THING" truth be told it was pretty dodgy brakes wise but i miss it but at least it didn't have its dignity stripped from it by being cut up or towed in
