turbo/supercharging a 1.4 8v

Featured Replies

hey all,

i dont have a clue what I'm doing car wise this year, I'm just thinking up ideas.

i know a 1.4 8v has less compression etc than a 16v, so would be able to take forced induction better,

what would be a better option to run? a charger or turbo?

i understand that turbos take no power to run, but chargers give a more linear powercurve right from the bottom end, but take power to gain etc.

has anyone actually done either of these to a 1.4 8v?

what would it cost to do? what sort of benefits would be gained?

i wouldnt be after silly power, or pushing too many limits, as if i wanted something fast id do a proper conversion or buy a different car,

but i was thinking along the lines of

cam

minor head work

exhaust system (keeping cat?! :o )

and induction to go with it all

along with a charger/turbo and mapping suited.

just want info on figures, difficulty, costs, what boost could the standard internals take?

any info appreciated,

and I'm not here to be told ''its not worth it'' or use this engine or do this do that, i just wanna know info based upon what I'm asking :)

thanks

just been doing some reading & had a chat with my dad.

seriously considering a turbo,

would probably run on bike carbs, lower the cr and run about 1.0bar of boost.

potentially run a cam with a slight overlap too.

could anyone recommend a turbo to suit? and does anyone know if they make thicker headgaskets? as id rather not run 2 to lower the cr lol

thanks

the problem is that the 1.4 6n engine isnt very strong and will most probally bend rods, id just start with a abd or aav engine from the mk3 era, specially if your only going to be running a bar of boost

And likely to be hassle getting it to work with bike cars as they need to be sealed. This was covered just before Xmas. Suggest you have a loom at that, was covered in detail

you need to read up about forced induction with bike carbs, its not really the way forward, you'd be far better of using bike throttle bodies, a custom plenum chamber and standalone management.

the initial cost of all the parts will be quite large, but the parts can be transferred over to another engine, when your original invariably breaks.

read the thread titled supercharger in this section, for some in depth tech talk.

theres a supercharged 1.4 8v on here already....belongs to richard waters (mk4supercharged)

he started a build thread, his dad is andy waters who has a website under that name as he is involved in motorsport.

richards car is custom set up so he will not give you full details but he will be able to guide you, plus hes a top bloke...they sell g40 charger kits from the garage i believe =D

20vt it is then

Do you know how much money it costs for a 20VT?

If your seriously considering F/I , then i would think about dropping in an earlier engine as said above, An AAV, ABD, MH or even a 3F, All can be had for basically free.

Reason for this is that they will be able to take boost much more reliably than a 6n engine and don't need the C/R dropping.

I think the supercharger topic that someone mentioned gave an estimated price of around £1000 for a turbo ABD with great BHP figures.

It's a custom built Eaton bracket and aftermarket management. Think it now runs a decompression plate too from what he said in one of his posts. Not rocket science - but not cheap!!

If you're able to fabricate stuff yourself then a 20v conversion is probably the best value for money.

TSR Performance used to do turbo kits for the small-block Polo 6N/6N2 and Lupo engines. Problem was, they were £3.5k for a kit - and that didn't include any uprated bottom end mods. And with a stock bottom end the rods tended to bend.

Rothe Motorsport in Germany are worth a look too for Polo turbo kits. Again, not likely to be cheap.

BTW - do you work in B118 at Gaydon? Sure I've seen your car on-site near there.

yes mate i do indeed!

well storm developments do the 1.6 8v supercharger kit, about 3k but surely could be used on a 1.4 8v

maybe ill jsut buy a new car :L

dished pistons perhaps? just running a small garrett?

would the gearbox not self implode anyway? :o
