We want this duty frozen - or for the Tories to honour a pre-Election pledge for a fuel "stabiliser", which would cut duty when oil prices rise and reinstate it when they go down.

I don't want the fuel duty frozen though, I want it taken away altogether.

Fuel duty effects everyone no matter who you are even if you hate cars and are proper green!

I think it should be scrapped and extra tax put on stuff that will make a difference, like fatty foods for example.

If you were to make it so its cheaper to eat healthy then we might have less fat slobs in this country. Meaning they could get off their arse and do some work and contribute to the country instead of helping to drain it!

fuel duty will never go away, it creates too much money and shifting the burden from one type of goods to another would piss people off no end of folks. imagine people that don't drive suddenly having to pay 4 times the price for some thing so that people that do drive can have an easier life, do you see them voting for that party again? no chance. people don't lok at the bigger picture, all they will see is the price of their big macs flying through the roof.

So bullying people onto public transport or to drive slow boring impractical hybrid/electric cars is the answer? Because thats what all this is leading to. People who enjoy driving or have earned the money to drive a big expensive motor are being drained of lots more of their hard earned because the government doesn't like it. And they have managed to convince the general public its wrong too.

no it's not the answer, but like you said they have already convinced the public and unfortunately most of the public only see cars as a method of getting from a-b. if you give some one that doesn't drive, or drives a 'green' car the choice of taking away fuel duty then for example raising vat to compensate for the lost revenue, do you think that joe public would understand and be able to see the bigger picture? (whole sale prices dropping due to the drop in transporting cost). although that's even if the companies would pass on the savings, i know for a fact my boss would just see it as if they were willing to pay that price before then they would still pay it now and it's more profit for him. my boss is a very greedy prick. the problem is so are a lot of successful bosses and that's how they got to be so successful. when the whole sale cost of oil or gas drops, do the fuel or energy company's pass on that drop? if we are lucky they gives us a little bit to make it look like they are doing us a favour then keep the rest as profit.

fuel duty is here and it's here to stay, all we can't possibly do is try and make cameron stick to his word. now if this was just me or you doing this we wouldn't stand a chance, but the sun went a long way to backing cameron in the election and are now making a lot of noise about this. he's already tried to fob them off with "we'll see what we can do in the budget in march" but they ain't having it and are demanding some thing is done now.

the sun is probably not every one's favorite newspaper, but at least they are trying to do some thing and i can't see them letting it lie tbh.

yep that is fucking disgusting. i'm crap at maths but could any one workout what the cost of a liter of fuel would be if they added the vat on before fuel duty? would be interesting to see what kind of difference it would make

Did you know that fuel is taxed twice...thats how much of of a money maker it's been for all our Governments.

Face it people...tough times are ahead for all of us...the £10 a gallon isn't too far away.

Well fuel duty is charged at (as near as makes no difference) 58.9p per litre.

So the petrol up my way just now is £1.249

Which is (Fuel cost + Duty) + VAT.

Take the VAT away and it comes to £1.041 per litre.

Take away the Duty and it comes to £0.452 per litre.

So if you add VAT onto that it would come to £0.542

Then you add the Duty and you get a grand total of £1.131 per litre.

So we are being done out of about 11p per litre with the government being illegal bastards!!!

fuck me, that's a bigger figure than i thought it would be. so even if they just played fair with us it would make a massive difference over the price of a full tank

the sun uses petitions like these as a form of publicity and not much ever comes from them.

It covers everything except red diesel or aviation fuel.

Thats what I mean when I said it put the price of everything up as everything in some way shape of form uses a fuel in order to serve us.

And to hajman: What about in 2009 when the price of petrol dropped heavily for a while and went all the way down to 89.9p per litre? Its since then we have been on this steady upward trend which is putting us within reach of the £1.40 per litre mark.

It won't be too long and we'll run out of oil anyway.

I've signed it, but I'd rather a cheap as chips (although I notice chips ain't that cheap nowadays!) solution not using petrol at all instead.

On another note, paid for a years road tax last night, why can't at least half of this money put back into the roads? The ones near me are getting really bad lately and you'd think they would fix ones in a busy city quicker!

The only way to force prices down is to strategic boycot one of the main oil suppliers (which won't happen beacuse of lazy arses) Using supermarkets only don't work as they buy the cheap off cuts from which every fuel depot/refinery is cheapest. BP and Shell are well linked upstairs, so they need to be played off against the yank giants Esso (Exxon) and Texaco (Chevron)!
