The progress from October 2010:

This is the car the day I bought it:

Its actually only done 49k but the dials were replaced.

The mods done by the previous owner:

Pink/purple Halfords 'Ripspeed' alloys (Now for sale, if anyone wants them? :D)

Scorpion back box

40mm (I think) Apex lowering springs

tinted front indicators

The car had a small crash, requiring a new bumper, bonnet and dash as the airbags deployed. A GTI was used as a donor car to fix it resulting in a few GTI parts:

Front bumper w/ fogs

Front radiator

Honeycomb grill

Xenon headlights

Rear spoiler

dashboard

chrome dials

Since owning it I have done a few things, the main thing being a damn good clean!

Replaced the worn gear stick gaitor.

£1.50 well spent!

154416_500626573124_777093124_7150971_39

I did toy with the idea of an iPhone dock in the coin tray.

The previous owner fitted 10 gauge wiring, I ripped it out and replaced with 4 gauge.

167076_10150110725623125_777093124_75108

I then bought these as a temporary replacement until I can afford some deep dishes.

Plate holders, getting some dubmeister pressed plates soon.

166103_10150120467118125_777093124_76785

Head light protectors, no pics of them fitted but they actually look quite good.

168502_10150111216618125_777093124_75202

Polished sill protectors, £20 from ebay.

Thats it for now, I know I really need to take some decent pictures. A friend of mine is a photographer so hes going to take some for me once I give it a good polish and finish a few more mods.

I dont have a lot to spend but this a list of things I want to do gradually:

Central locking and an alarm (possibly door pops aswell)

Colour coded de-locked handles (rears from a 5 door)

Colour coded side and rear bumper trim to match the front

Black vinyl B Pillars

Pressed plates

GTI mats

A few audio upgrades, nothing OTT

Refurb and spray the BK wheels gunmetal grey

Then eventually I want to get a set of coilovers and some deep dish wheels :)

Thanks for looking, if anyone has any comments or suggestions that would be great.

Looks pretty cool. What happened to those purple beasties though?!

I just wasn't keen on the style or colour, they are currently on ebay. Not sure if its against forum rules to post ebay links?

how did you get the iphone dock in the card tray mate?

how did you get the iphone dock in the card tray mate?

I bought it from ebay for £1.20 and then trimmed off around 4mm from the base so that it would still allow me to close the tray. If I go with this idea I'm going to buy an Alpine head unit and run the ipod cable from the back on the headunit to the dock. I'm also going to work out how to only allow the tray to come out half way so it looks like it was made to fit.

Good work.

If you get an Alpine headunit buy a cheapo old ipod classic that you can just leave in your glovebox and run the wire into there. Looks so tidy done that way.

That's what I've done anyway and it gives you full freedom of using your phone etc.

Thanks for the comments guys, I have a mini update. Bought a couple of 12 inch subs for the boot, some black vinyl to do the B pillars and a new aerial gasket as mine looks like someones tried to eat it.

112_0057x.jpg

(I have all the protector brackets but only one is fitted here)

I know car sound systems aren't to everyones taste but its easy to remove and I never use the boot anyway. The subs are 1200w each (300w RMS), would any 600W+ RMS sub be sufficient or is there anything else I should look out for? Ideally I would like to amp my door speakers aswell but for now, a 2 channel amp for just the subs is fine.

IMG_0298-2.jpg

I've turned the sub around so its actually sitting on the back of the box but it looks a lot better IMO.

IMG_0306-1.jpg

I ordered colour coded handles, a switch blank and 2 rear 'grab handles'. The ebay seller sent me a few extras which was good of him. I wont be fitting the handles untill I have central locking fitted though as they are rear ones and dont have locks.

IMG_0307.jpg

Black B pillars done. They turned out very well, my cheapested and most effective mod so far.

Edited by ryekye

how did you black your pillars dude?

this is looking smart, like the pillars and handles

Thanks for the comments!

I bought some chavvy "viper stripes" from ebay, It was about £5 for 2 x4m of striping which is more than enough. I started off by following the instructions by using soapy water but for the final attempt (as seen in the picture), I just removed the backing paper and slapped it on dry and trimmed it to suit. It turned much better than expected and I used a hair dryer and a credit card to get out all of the air bubbles.

A pic next to a stock 5 door, my cars lower than I thought but still needs to be lower :p

IMG_0346.jpg

Not an obvious mod but I quite like them, they are standard struts that have been chrome plated.

I have ordered a RClick central kit and should be fitting it this weekend if it arrives, along with the de locked handles.

If a mod sees this, can you please move this thread to the Mk5 projects section please.

The central locking kit arrived, its a 4 door kit so I will only be using 2 of the motors.

IMG_0409.jpg

It came with two central locking remotes with a flick out key, just needs cutting and a transponder fitted.

IMG_0410.jpg

It also came with an LED that blinks when the car is locked, it was housed in an ugly blue thing so I took it apart and installed the LED in a switch blank. I prefer the factory finished look.

The dishes arrived yesterday, went for some RH Cups, yes they are common but I personally think they really suit the 6n2.

RH Cups

IMG_0482.jpg

IMG_0484.jpg

I'm guessing the previous owner was using camber shims haha, had these two tyres replaced with 195/45s rather than 50s.

IMG_0486.jpg

In the tyre shop about to have the new tyres fitted.

IMG_0490.jpg

Just needs lowering and some 195/45s on the back to match.

IMG_0490sdasdasdasd.jpg

How it should look when its lowered on some coilovers!

To do:

Sort engine management light (getting diagnostics tool this week)

Replace driver side CV joint boot

New discs and pads (EBC Green Stuff worth the cash?)

Polish the RH Cups

Coilovers

Colour coded trim all round

New tailgate (or get dent repaired)

alpine headunit

custom sub enclosures

If a mod sees this thread can you please move it to the Mk5 Project section please, I have messaged a cople of mods already but they are ignoring me haha.

I bought an iphone dock from ebay then ran an ipod cable from the back of the dock to the headunit. I don't use it anymore though, I need to find a way to only allow the coin tray to come out half way so it looks neater and the phone so it isn't in the way.

One of my rear numberplate bulbs was half burned out and too dull so I replaced both with some LED bulbs.

IMG_0512.jpg

IMG_0511.jpg

I should have waited untill it was dark to take a picture but even in daylight you can see the difference.

IMG_0501.jpg

The engine management light has been on constantly for the last 100 miles or so, I bought a Vag Com cable to find out why.

IMG_0502.jpg

It told me there were 3 faults with the engine management, as I only have a shareware version of the software it only told me one of the 3 codes. The one it did identify was reset by disconnecting the battery to reset the ECU, this made the EM light go out for about 10 miles but its back on again now. I'm going to try and get a better version of the software and try again.

Its not very noticable in pictures but there is a huge dent/crumple in the tailgate on the right hand side of the badge. It stretches from the bottom of the glass to the bottom of the tailgate. There is also bubbles of rust around the edge of the glass so I have ordered a prestine condition tailgate which will be here in the next week or so. I'm taking a bit of a chance though as the owner couldn't tell me if the tailgate was satin silver or reflex silver. Fingers crossed!

You got a link to those bulbs mate?

Tiny update:

P3300093.jpg

Interior bulb replacement, consisting of 12 little LEDs

IMG_0532.jpg

Theres room to wire up a few of these in the massive bulb housing, but they are so bright that one is enough.

IMG_0534.jpg

Gold tyre valve covers, tbh they look a bit shit haha but I thought I would post it anyway, only a couple of quid from ebay and come with matching valve caps. They have since been replaced with chrome ones.

Thanks man :-)

The dent in the tailgate didn't really show up in alot of pictures but trust me it was huge, ugly and made the car look scruffy.

IMG_0569.jpg

It looks like the previous owner reversed it into a lampost at some point.

IMG_0570.jpg

IMG_0571.jpg

You can just about see it here.

IMG_0573.jpg

IMG_0577.jpg

The old tailgate looking sorry for itself.

IMG_0578.jpg

stripped of its dignity!

IMG_0574.jpg

Done! Going to de-badge the "POLO" bit later.

IMG_0575.jpg

Ghetto de-wipering

IMG_0579.jpg

The car was on the verge of tacky before with all the stickers, this time I've gone for a single classy sticker. I know my 40mm lowering springs dont deserve this sticker but I should be sitting on coilvers next month.

IMG_0589.png

Arty farty iphone app

IMG_0572.jpg

Also swapped out the 2 x 12" JBLs for a single 10" Focal, way more suited to the little polo.
