22mm master cylinder

Featured Replies

hi all

I have a k reg 1043 bread van with g40 front break set up braided hoses to finish off i think a 22 mm master cylinder will just help that last bit.

I know iam sorry for asking this i have just been reading thru the old posts and cant see a defo answer. I have the couple of part numbers off there and

I know most likely off a mk 2 golf 16v and passat but any idea of cars year etc.

some people suggest using Sharron 24mm if this is just as easy whats the part number for that?

also will i need a new fluid bottle if so were is best get one of them.

if its only £40 or so i can change it and put fresh fluid in all should be well.

thanks for any answers i know its been asked loads it would be great if someone could give me a shopping list of all parts lol

thanks ant

i wood just go for the 22mm one. thay have an extra hole in them for a brake pipe you have to block that off (a old bleed nip will do) and your fluid bottle fits on fine..

Thanks very much should i use gfs and one of these ?

65276 BRAKE MASTER CYL-22.2mm PA 4/88 >12/96 34.20

65277 BRAKE MASTER CYL-FAG 22mm PA 4/88 >12/96 54.00

if so 276 or 277

thanks again

I'm not sure you really need this mate. You haven't increased the brake piston size from standard, so no real need to increase the master cyl size. It's also not as easy to fit. You need to either shorten the input shaft it make up a spacer. Also, the brake lines enter in different places. That means modding old ones, which may not be that easy/possible or get all new hard lines through out. I'm just planning the latter now. However, I'm running a whole golf mk2 16v set up, minus servo

fitting this master cylinder will decrease your pedal travel but you'll have to press the pedal harder to get the same braking effect without increasing the piston size at the caliper end as prankstar says. Bigger doesn't just mean better. but some people do prefer it with less travel.

Either of those you listed is the right part, one is cheaper quality and one is made by FAG so is basically OEM spec.

Great stuff

i want less travel defo. People on here say its a easy swop and lots swar by it.

This was my point in first post there is no real how to and pro n cons.

Confused now.

well there is no definitive answer as it's just down to personal preference. But I got the impression you thought it'd make your brakes more effective in that there is more clamping effort on the pads for the same "leg" effort but in fact the opposite is true. But it does reduce travel which just makes the brakes feel a bit more modern and can give you more confidence in them.

It's up to you if you want to spend the money and time doing it, I certainly wouldn't go bigger than 22mm though.

Thanks so much.

For the price i think itl be worth it for the less travel.

Plus iam due a fluid change as my fluid tank cap broke and i think there is mosture in there so a good over haul of breaks is in need.

I know this is the wrong place to ask but u wouldnt know were to point me with regards of fitting a 5 speed box to my 4 speed car as i beleve i have to reset something to allow the 5 th gear.

Also me needing a new ecu every year when it gets cold. ( posted in corect place but no one can help)

any way thanks for all your advise and help.

Ant

fitting a 5 speed box is just a case of swapping it over, there's loads of threads on here about it if you do a search using the google search box at the top.

as for the ecu problem, I have no idea, never heard of that happening before. Are you sure the problem is really the ecu?

Lol

iam as sure as i can be thats why i posted er it seems like a faulty blue temp sense, last year when we had cold snap when car is cold it would bairly run with lots of black crap out of the zorst til it got warm then would run fine but still be over fuel ( like 150 mile t a tank bad ) so i tested blue temp all ok i changed plugs leads etc still the same. So i un pluged ecu for 4 days started and ran fine for a few days so a kind guy on here sold me a new ecu and was fine till the bad weather we just had. Same again if i swop to old ecu its fine few days then bad again. Visa versa if the ecu has a few days re set its ok. I gunner try another ecu see if that works til it gets cold again.

Could it be lamda?

Iam lost with it i can re wire anything fit car audio to comp std but this has me stumped.

Thanks if you know anyone who can help point them at me.
