Comments: This is my first car, purchased last year. Nice low mileage example, first got it mechanically sound with a cambelt change and a full service. Now I've started modding it. Done quite abit and lots more to come including some TA Technix coilovers that have just arrived, fitting this week hopefully :)

A rather unfortunate day, was hit by a freshly-passed-girl driver at my college. Reversed straight into me! Have spent hours polishing front and it seems to have mostly gone now. Needs some Tcut then will be sorted I think. Her corsa came out worse.. vw build quality eh :)!

Fitted gti grille, trim and also de-wipered back. Pics to follow!

Lots of potential! Nice base!

Had my mates round all day to fit the coilies. Didn't have any problems with the rears, but the fronts have been a different story! Currently its sitting in the garage on the axel stands, as the fronts will just not budge. All the bolts are off, but they won't move and are caught on the steering gaiters. Anyway.. After reviewing the haynes manual think I know why and tomorrow morning they will be finished (hopefully). Will give it a nice shine and get some decent pics. Also fitting a new rear bumper tomorrow after work, body coloured which I bought off how-low today. Also fogs to fit, but need some self tapping screws.! As you can see I've done a few little mods now. De-wipered, de-badged, gti grill, central locking half fitted! and a nice chunky backbox I got off nippy_360 :)

The front bearings have finally arrived from VW...........so the Coilovers are now fitted!

Ride feels firm, but not uncomfortable. I'm gonna lift the back a little as currently the exhaust scrapes on the speed bump entrance to college !! :( Otherwise loving it low.

.... bet everyone will dig at me for the gti badge!.. But I like it.. Also fitted some fogs and completely refurbed my front headlights, with wet sanding and then polishing with PlastX. Will make a tutorial when I do my mates clio. Was surprised how well they turned out, As new condition.

de-wipered and stubby chrome aerial. Might get a black one, but this was 2 quid on the bay and it works well, so can't complain.

Thats all for now. Thinking about a bonnet bra, also have some surf blue body coloured bumpers I need to fit.

cheers mate. ye I fitted them on Saturday with 2 mates and it was pretty easy. Just followed the tutorial which is on uk-polos and a bit of common sense. But unfortunately, my front bearings were completely knackered, so had to wait until yesterday to fit the fronts. All in all it was pretty much a days work and that was with no previous experience of doing them, so I reckon it would be piss easy to fit them in the future. I'm not very keen on the exhaust myself. Bought it cheap off the forum and didn't realise just how big it would be!! Doesn't sound bad, not too loud, will probably replace it in the future. When I didn't have the gti badge the holes for it in the honeycomb grille were pissing me off! Might look for an alternative badge, something which fills that space but isn't trying to be something my car obviously isn't.

Nothing wrong with that, less strain on the handbrake. Infact, no need at all for the handbrake if you leave it in first on a hill.

I leave mine in gear also, cus if the handbrake cable snap's especially in this cold weather it will stop it rolling forward/back

time consuming, but easy todo. will take about an hour and a half per headlight.

this is how you do it:

you will need:

- a couple microfibre cloths

- a flannel or towel like cloth

- quality sandpaper, I used 3 grits, 1000, 1200 and 3000.

- a bucket of cold water

- Meguiars PlastX

- a spray bottle of water

- masking tape

- patience

my headlights were severely clouded/oxidised. I used 3 strengths of sandpaper purchased from a local auto shop. 1000 grit, 1200 grit and 3000 grit. Ideally you would want something to bridge the gap between 1200 and 3000, perhaps a 2000, but this is all they had and it worked fine and cost only a couple quid for several sheets.

Start by cutting the sandpaper to workable squares and soak each piece in a bucket of water for 10 minutes before use. Mask around the headlight, as you don't want sanded paintwork!

Start with the 1000 grit and work in a horizontal movement, only work in one direction, with any one grit of sandpaper. As you do this spray the surface regularly with a bottle of water (I just washed out an empty cleaning bottle and filled it with water). Be quite firm with it and patient, it will end up looking something like this:

At this point you will be thinking something along the lines of .... "shiiit i hope this turns out ok!!"

Dry the surface of the headlight and make sure you have a reasonably even finish, if not correct it before you proceed.

Now move onto the 1200 grit working in a vertical direction, opposite to what you did with the 1000. Continue to spray the surface regularly. Take pride in doing a decent job of it, don't rush and get a nice even finish. spend about 15 minutes on each grit level, if you are unsure what the finish is like dry the surface and check. Mine looked like this:

Ok so 3000 grit now. Finishing in a horizontal direction. Same applies as before, just take your time and get a decent finish. Once you have finished with the 3000, dry it off with a microfibre cloth. I don't have a picture of this stage, but after using 3000 it will be noticeably clearer, although fine scratches will be visible.

Time for the polishing stage. Apply a decent amount of Meguiars PlastX to a flannel like material. I tried a regular polishing pad and a microfibre cloth, but really it needs to be a material that's a little more abrasive, so a flannel or rough towel will do best. Use quite a lot of pressure and really work it in in a circular motion, applying more plastx when necessary. I probably spent about 20 minutes per headlight polishing by hand before it reached a finish I was happy with, but you could even spend longer. You could use a machine, but Its probably not really required, I did not. Some say that leaving plastx on to dry for 15-20 minutes and then buffering off improves the finish, but I didn't bother.

After polishing:

(the white around the bottom, is just masking tape residue)

It's difficult to show just how good these came out, but they are really like new even if you look up close. Before they were yellowed, oxidised and cloudy :). I think it would be good to seal them with some type of uv protector after finishing, but I have not done so yet.

So that's it really. 2 hours or so and a pair of like-new headlights, for under 20 quid. I might make a decent full length tutorial with more pictures when I do the clio.

Ye mine was all on the outside. But I wasn't sure, I thought it might be on the inside too until I had finished. Unless your headlight is not properly sealed, would just be outside I imagine.
