1.6 8v mk4 engine mods

Featured Replies

I've just got a 16. 8v mk4 polo and I was just wondering what engine modifications I can do to make it faster. Obviously not into turbos or supercharging just yet

Cheers for any help

Depends what engine it is mate, theres an AEE which is A MPI engine, and an AEA which Is a SPI engine, as far as i know there is no chips available for the AEA but there is for AEE.

Most common mods i would say are:

4 branch mani - decat

Air filter

Chip If available

Bike carbs if not using chip

Cam

I also believe that you Can use the GT management with the aee engine to get around 100 BHP

have a search I'm sure theres loads of threads like this, hope this helps :).

Cheers mate. I've got a 1995 1.6 GLX on an N plate. So whatever engine they come with

How much extra power would I get with bike carbs??

That should be the aea then. Iirc, aea only ran on early 95 models. Could be wrong however

I'm currently tuning an aea for an mk2. Currently it's had all new valves, guides, gaskets, bearings with new rings and a re-bore. I have some cbr600 bike carbs too, 4-2-1 and a Gt cam to add yet. To top it off, i have a 2" ashley exhaust system too. With all those mods, I'd be suprisred if it doesn't achieve 100bhp. People have claimed that the bike carbs alone, if set up correctly, can increase power by ~25bhp

You could try a gt box too (late model). Short ratios, so accelerates faster. But it will rev more in all gears, so say good bye to quiet motorway trips and fuel economy!

Its a long stroke engine and its nature is in torque. A different cam obviously changes this but otherwise its both a strong and weak point - strong because torque is good and low revs are efficient, weak because low gearing becomes frustrating and it makes for a low bhp figure on paper (a GT box would be horrible,i fitted a 1.0 box and removed it the same week).

Unlike programmable injection, bike carbs only amplify the nature of the engine,so whilst they make it considerably more powerful, its still a torque-biased motor.

I've ran two bike carb'd 1.6 8v 6n engines, both the later AEE code, both obviously ran about the same but for different gearboxes and exhausts. A smaller exhaust gave me more torque but it wouldn't pull past 5.5k in 4th,and longer gearing was always best,in fact i never found a box long-geared enough for me.

But both engines were fitted in MK2's. For a 6n i recon its original box should be fine,no matter how you go about modifying it.

could be an aee as i had a N reg 1.6 8v that was an AEE

had bike carbs on one of my 8vs and was great fun

also i ran an AEE with a valver throttle body, valver injectors, gt cam plus 4 branch straight through decat exhaust and that pulled awesomely but you will need it remapping or youll end up melting a piston like i did lol

i don't really want to change the gearbox. I was just wondering what I could do to the engine to make it more powerful. where can I find the engine code?

its on the block somewhere but cant remember where =S

dont think youll have to change the gearbox, i didnt but then i have a longer gearing on my box anyway for some reason but i use my old AEE box on my valver =D

i don't really want to change the gearbox. I was just wondering what I could do to the engine to make it more powerful. where can I find the engine code?

It's on the end of the block nearest the gearbox, see pic

Sticker in the boot would be the easyiest way should tell you the engine code & gearbox code unless someone has swapped the engine or box at sometime in it's life

hi, which gt ecu would work on the aee engine? just that would give it 100bhp? did i read that right?

thanks

mine aee makes 138bhp and 173Nm torque with ported head, higher compression,38mm bike carbs, complete powersprint exaust 60mm,272 newman cam

sounds nice bet that cost a bob or 2. would 1.6 16v inlet mani and throttle body fit and do anything for a 1.6 8v?

thanks

got the sticker out my boot

hope this helps clear up what mods i can and cant do

mk4polosticker-1.jpg

well youve got an AEE which is a good start

you dont want the GT ECU...you want the GT CAM!!!!!!!!!!!

dont think the 1.6 16v inlet manifold will fit but the 16v injectors and throttle body off of an AFH will fit on your inlet manifold and work but as stated you will need to get the ecu remapped

Sander beer - get some pics of this car up....if its not in pics or print out then it doesnt exist lol

so i need a gt cam

and now i have an AEE i can get a chip yeah?

and run bike carbs??

you dont need a gt cam but its a very good and easy modification

you dont run a chipped ecu with bike carbs!! you run a different ignition set up with bike carbs which means you dont use the ecu as such.

chips are pointless...if you run bigger injectors and throttle body then youd want a remap not a generic chip

seriously though, there are loads of threads on this type of stuff and you can just read up on it

hi, have you got links to other aee tuning cuz dont seem to be able to find them :(

would just fitting the throttle body help with throttle response and not need to remap?

on a small budget just want to fiddle :D

thanks

If your on a budget, you may as well forget massive gains. Most of the info is in this thread now. Take a look at other threads relating to engine tuning for polos and they may give you more ideas

People talk of using a larger throttle body yes, but since you have the largest available to the polo, you'd have to look elsewhere. Passat or golf are your best bet, bunt wouldn't know how to fit etc. Also, I'm not sure on what gains you'd achieve

hi, thought the 1.4 16v throttle body would be bigger as theyve got more bhp and need more airflow.

i dont want massive gains but something which 1.6 should have really.

thinkin relpacement k&n filter and not the induction kit. the throttle body and injectors if they do help.

then when i get monies and time 4 branch, exhaust and cam gt or reprofiled one..

thanks

yes the 16v throttle body is larger and would help, though no point getting a K&N until you decide if your uprating the throttle body or not as you will want a different size one.

injectors will want a remap or youll melt a piston or two =D

4 branchs and gt cams come up regularily on here as do bike carbs

so the AFH 1.4 16v throttle body and its filter housing is a good start for throttle response i guess no increase in power. then replacement filter to suit, tryin to avoid remap for now so leave the injectors.

sorry I'm very new to polo's got a mk2vr6 project so knowthem inside and out haha

thanks

hi, got myself a gt cam an 1.4 16v throttle body coming :D

any ideas what gain i would get from these? also, how much will it affect mpg?

thanks
