is the HID kit (single beam) used for the main beam or low beam?

Normally low beam, not advisable for full beam as the bulbs's wont last long due constant on/off nature of full beam use.

but If your car is H4 then you must have Hi/lo kit.

Regardless they will supposedly become illegal to use in december

where'd you hear that?

seems to be doing the tour on forums, I'm yet to read any proper proof hence why I said supposedly.

From what's been said, it will be illegal to sell, fit or use HID's in a vehicle that didnt leave the factory with them.

my mates got HIDs on his land rover. they are awesome. they are hi/low.

What i think there trying to do is cut down on poor fitting/too high a K number/people fitting single phase H4's for example.

Mk3 polo lights despite not being designed for HID's still give give almost perfect pattern and beam and almost 0 scatter, the same applies to the mk1 saxo but if HID's are fitted to a mk2 saxo due to the type of lamp fitted they do not give ant clear beam pattern and the amount of scatter is stupid and even dazzle the driver sitting inside the car

Before Xmas i had a HID bulb fail due to old age and had to put standard halogens in, driving in the dark felt as if I had tinted the windscreen.

That's interesting, have you got any pics of the beam pattern out of mk3 lights? I was hesitant to get a HID kit without projector housings, but you reckon it's ok?

I've got 4 MOT's to prove it (never had the same tester twice), I used a lamp setter in the MOT station prior to the first MOT with HID's and they were slightly high (something to do with halogen bulbs being dim) so 10seconds with a screwdriver and all was perfect. Last MOT tester said it was a bit difficult to pin point centre due to the brightness causing glare on his aiming unit (he had a brand new one so all the mirrors/lenses were super shiny) but once the cross hairs lined up the pattern lined up perfect on the back of the box (which for the MOT is what they are looking for).

I've also passed 2 VOSA roadside checkpoints without anyone saying anything but seen other cars issued with a notice to remove them due to improper fitment/bulb colour.

We test fitted a set into my old mk2 Saxo and the lamp shape isnt designed for HID's at all and if we had taken it out for a drive we would have most likely been pulled by the first cop to drive passed.

Ah nice one, what temperature have you got? Do you know where you got them from, there's so many different sellers on eBay it's difficult to know if they'll be any good or not.

mine were originally from Xenon's online and use the same ballasts now but I got my replacement bulbs from Ebay when one burnt out.

Most kits are identical bulb wise but for a mk3 you do need a Bi-xenon to keep the hi/lo beam, so HIDS 4 U should be ok, sadly H4 Bi-xenons are the most expensive kits due to the extra parts required (a pair of bulbs are between £30 & £50)

Currently I'm using 4300k (white with no blue tint) but will be changing to 3000k (Yellow) soon.

I'm wondering what this sudden intrest in having HID's is with everyone? there has been about 10 threads in the last 2/3 days.

nah got the big old type,, Got one mounted to the Airbox bolt (could be hidden behind the airbox if fitted, I've not bothered finding anywhere decent to move it too) the other is hidden behind the washer tank, my foglamp ones are a bit smaller bit and are mounted behind the grill next to the grill lamps.

As said, if the new rules come in regarding MOT's then HID's will be picked up on and cars will start failing come December (or whenever it is they come in).

However as I said in another thread last night, they ARE ALREADY ILLEGAL if the car in question doesn't have correct lens, headlight washers and self levellers fitted. See here, a link from DFT which clearly states what I have just said - http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roadsafety/drs/hidheadlamps

So yeah, already illegal on cars that weren't designed for them. I've had them, and I admit they're good but I took them off when I realized. I know of people on other forums who have been pulled and ticketed for having them, not worth the agro to be honest.

EDIT: Forgot to say, just because you can pass an MOT with them doesn't mean they are legal. MOT testers tick boxes, they won't report you for having illegal mods/lights!

Peugeot 306's. Just one of those things I guess, some people are lucky, some people aren't!

I'm running bi xenons bought for £43 new delivered off ebay. they are absolutly top notch,loom is spot on and no flashing or spotting, the ballasts are the big old type but I've fitted them behind my grill next to each headlight and the loom is run with the main light loom. in the bay you couldnt tell i have h.i.ds. will get name of seller if anyone interested. very quick roadside swap back to halogens if need be.
