I got a new polo but the problem is i cant turn the headlights off. its automatic and i like to fully turn them off at day so my bulbs wont wear out quick.

i did what the manuals says and its not working. how do i deactivate automatic headlights?

You cant de-activate them, all new cars are required to have them as law now!

there was a new law passed that all cars must have their sidelights on at all times..

My 59 plate Golf does it to..VW's orders :)

Can't you just take the bulbs out? Probably not the most helpful reply but it's just a suggestion

How much is a bulb? It wont wear out that quick.

Look at the advantages, you don't have to remember to switch them off and on, you see more (not much more during the day tbh lol) and others see you a lot easier! :)

I had a rental golf, think it was possibly a 57 plate which had daylight running lights, but the manual detailed the procedure to turn them off, guess things might've changed since then though!

so what will happen if you dont turn your headlights on during the day on older cars? do you get points/fine?

If your worried about burning out your sidelights, once there gone just replace them with led ones.

There not expensive and will last ages!

instead of going through all the hassle of going to the garage to replace them with leds, cant i just deactivate the automatic headlights.

i followed the manual on deactivation but its not working.

There was something on pistonheads a while back on using the stalks to deactivated, but it is now a dealer job or some one with VAG-COM.

The bulbs shouldnt wear out that quickly, after all the mk2f polo had a dim dip function and the bulbs lasted ages, and changing the bulbs on the new polo's is a pretty easy job thanks to another EU Law (Must be able to change the bulb on the side of the road).

But they are there for your safety, think how many people you see driving in poor viability with no lights on.

Its not law that everyone has to now run with side lights on. Its just now all Newly build cars will have daytime running lights fitted as standard. A stupid think if you ask me!

these new polos you have to take the headlights out to replace the bulbs. its not a easy job.

It can't be that hard to remove a headlamp on a new car.....just a couple of bolts and maybe unclip the grille at the most...and at least the bolts won't be rusted in!!

If you are worried about the bulbs wearing out and fit led ones make sure you buy canbus correcting ones, or you will have a bulb failure on your display and led's that keep going on and off at random.

All newly produced cars have to have daytime running lights as stated above, but the law doesn't include older cars. So no worries about points for us without them.

Are led bulbs legal to use?

to use led bulbs do i need to change voltage or adapt the bulb socket or they simply just slot in and work?

regarding daytime running lights problem i also noticed that the tail lights do not turn off as well.

I see VW golfs, polos newer than mine that are 11/61 plates driving around and I dont see their daytime running lights turned on so why my car?

You can do it with VAGCOM. Not sure exactly how it's done but it's on there. These lights are DRL's (daytime running lights) these CAN be switched off and it says in the manual. Simply turn on the sidelights, voila. Auto lights on the other hand are different they turn the lights on and off for you, these can be switched off by putting the light switch into the 0 position.

Also DRL's come on when the engine starts and they run the main beam lights at 30-40%,you're right in saying that they would burn out quicker, but if they are replaced with good quality bulbs then they should last as long as other cars.

putting the switch into 0 position turn on the sidelights but also turn on the tail lights and radio/instruments lights that I dont want.

My DRL's activates the main beam, side and tail lights? is this right?

Doesnt DRL's cause more stress on the battery in return reduces performance?

Unless you have a faulty charging circuit then the drain while the engine is running will be minimal and should not reduce performance.

There are different settings for this in VAGCOM. You could always asks your vw dealer you never know they might do it for nothing?

just get over it. there not going to burn out quickly. you bought i new car I'm sure you can save up for a few years to buy some bulbs.
