Mk3 Polo Coupe' CL Project

Featured Replies

Well its not much of a project really

Just got rid of my daily hack in favour of something a little more VAG

Picked up a 1991 Polo Coupe' CL 1.3 in white just down the road from me :-)

TOTALLY bog standard at the moment other than being on Mk1 Golf CL alloys and having half tinted lights so its looking pretttty homo But i'm planning on having it looking semi respectible in a few weeks

Its always too dark when i finish work to get any decent pics so i'll upload some at the weekend

The plan is that almost everything that goes on it can be crossed over to my Mk1 Golf G60 project :-D

List of things to do:

-Mop faded paint

-FK 60-40 lowering springs

-Full GT arch/skirt kit

-2.5" outwardly rolled exhaust

-Momo steering wheel

-Mk1 Golf GTi seats (depending on how low they sit)

-Smoked side repeaters, Headlights and Indicators

-Flat wipers

.....

And Finally.....

14" Schmidt TH Lines 8-)

Borrowed the polisher and some 3M fast cut plus from work and started on the bonnet putting some masking tape down the middle to show the difference

5379157232_4810d04392.jpg

Was amazed at how much colour i managed to restore After that had to wash all the excess polish off

5378576617_0e7e9b9e99.jpg

Then a wax with autoglym high def, fixed the boot catch which wouldn't open, lock or anything, then once she'd dried off completely treated her black bumpers to some linseed oil and tyres to some megs tyre shine Although hopefully these wheels and tyres won't be on her too long

Going to a rolling road day tomorrow with my mate so i won't be paying her any attention tomorrow But next weekend she deserves to be de wipered and depending on money situation possibly treated to something on my list (thinking springs)

Just went a lil' mad and ordered pretty much everything on my list (bar GT arches and TH lines) :p

Couldn't resist! A little pissed off as i was told you could remove the steering wheel boss spline with a gear puller but tried at the weekend and had no luck what so ever...... Sooooo the missus is gonna order me a new steering wheel and boss kit for valentines day

I dunno wether anyone can tell me wether i'm doing it wrong but this is how i went about it.....

5388063610_954af49b46.jpg

I know i know its an exhaust "TIP" (hangs head in shame) But i can't be spending too much money on this polo otherwise my golf project will go downhill and i don't want that happening Its purely got to look OK (ish)

Well i've kinda boshed the "TIP" on but i'm gonna chop and change a few bits on it to get it to fit better

5387458161_610bc76f0d.jpg

Ripped out the old GAYYYY orange indicator lenses

5387458679_75d978e1eb.jpg

A few more tiny bits came today but no springs yet

30mm socket for hub nut, Led sidelight bulbs, 100w Xenon Headlight bulbs, 8 led interior festoon bulb

5390855570_49efaf9101.jpg

First thing to do as it was raining was the interior bulb....

Before:

After:

5390248781_1d39547e79.jpg

Sidelight Bulb...

Before:

After:

5390857474_cc3fdc836a.jpg

Bit Annoyed that the headlights stay ever so slightly on when the sidelights are on though

Headlights Before (right) After (left)

5390250077_b51b6e12db.jpg

I then set out to put the other T4W led's in the number plate BUTTTT the autobulbsdirect guide (AutoBulbs Guide) lied to me and i soon found out they where 501's Must've looked like a complete TW@ trying to push and twist 501 bulbs to get them out

Only tiny little things done but as they say the little things all add up

Desperately waiting for the FK springs to arrive now so i can get them done at the weekend so it won't be sitting as high as a kite ;)

Very nice!

Can you PM me where you got all your lights from, this is something i really want to do :)

  • Author

Cheers mate :D Sent you a PM

Where did you get the lights from? Wanting to start my

Project the same as you basically! :)

The lights came on the car but i have seen em advertised on ebay and a few forums (on here and edition 38). There a standard oprional extra i think (available straight from VW) But if i was you a very cheap way of "making them" is to buy the tint spray off ebay and do em yourself

Just take the lights off, clean them with some warm soapy water and a scouring pad, dry them off, mask up what doesn't need smoking and spray (very light coats - 10 minutes atleast between coats) on the area you want to smoke (do as many coats as you think looks goo) But not too much otherwise you'll be on first name terms with the local plod :-D . Make sure that you spray them in a warm non moist area though (the garage is no good this time of year) I work in a bodyshop so i have the luxury of an oven to do most of my things in :D

Hope that helped, Ross

what bulbs are they man. thinking of upgrading my candlelit headlights

There the ones i ordered mate (100/90w) Every so slightly illegal but i don't think the rozzers will notice. I used to have the same ones in my old motor and people flashed me a bit with dipped beams on but never got pulled :D

MUCH better than the standard GAY ones :p

starting to look good mate, had some good plans for that before i got the 3rd one :L! keep up the good work and keep me posted

  • Author

Haha i haven't got any MASSIVE plans for it... Just whats written up the top there really :) But by this weekend it will be lowered 60/40 and after that i'll be DESPERATELY on the hunt for some GT arches :p But yeah i'll keep you posted (keep you eye on this coz i'll probably keep it updated) And when i've done a little i'll pop it ocer to see you in it

Bit Annoyed that the headlights stay ever so slightly on when the sidelights are on though

This is the dip/dim feature. There's a yellow cable and coil in the engine bay by the fusebox with 2 connectors. Disconnect the connectors and you should be all good ;)

  • Author

Ahhh cheers MartinB :D Just done this and it looks ALOT better

How about it a FREE mod which makes loads of difference :p

Looks alreet, orange indicators are where it's at though!

Only bad thing about the headlight bulbs is they make the inside of the headlights look blue when they're not on from certain angles, looks abit shit imo.

  • Author

Yeah mate will definately have to at some point :D

..............

.................................

No post came today :( so i had nothing to fit :(

Buttttt...........

I had to do something so i ripped the front lights out and proceeded to smoke them (just a little for now but i might do them a little more at a later date if i don't like them)

5394089664_7f75116a38.jpg

Also painted the front VW badge black for that kinda stealth / de badged look :D So its all sat in my room for tonight keeping warm and dry until i fit them in tomorrow night :D

5394090124_3e6159e979.jpg

I'm hoping the bloody springs arrive before the weekend!

I keep walking past the engine in the garage for my mk1 golf and can't help but think the polo deserves a baby version too :p

Has anyone put a G60 in a mk3 polo though? :D

Mine's looking lonely in the garage :(

5112546724_7acbbbd289.jpg

Halfords tool set represent!! I think the baby version is known as a g40 :p . The g60 is a tall block so it wont fit the mk3 without fairly major modification.

Polos coming along

Ian.

  • Author

Haha yeah halfords kit sitting down there scattered EVERYWHERE! :p

Yeah i was looking to see how much you can pick G40's up for :p Shame that a G60 wouldn't go in though :( I know of a corrado thats been shunted up the arse quite close to me i could have had the engine out of :p

It was actually a tiny bit light when i got home today and i'd had a few parcels delivered :D

5396106833_220e82290c.jpg

So i fitted the new smoked DEPO side repeaters...

5396107179_f025ce670b.jpg

And the wiper blades (barry bargain off ebay) :D

Old:

5396705610_9ceb524af7.jpg

New:

5396706124_d26acc36de.jpg

It looks quite sinister with the front grille and lights taken out :p

5396108681_ec500f5054.jpg

STILL no springs :(

But gonna tint the lights a tiny bit more tomorrow :D then de wiper the back :D and hopefully the bloody springs will be here tomorrow :) if not venom motorsport will have a very angry me on the phone seeing as i ordered them sunday night!

  • Author

Gave the lights a second coat of tint today to darken them up a little :D ....

5398661728_730e6022de.jpg

Think they look pretty good fitted myself (know there not going to be everyones cup of tea)

5398059791_e14d015bc1.jpg

5398059187_e44c3e0716.jpg

At the moment this is how the driveway looks :p ...

5398058479_d16d063a36.jpg

Took an angle grinder to the exhaust, Cut the old pipe shorter and modified the new tip to make it sit further back and straighter ...

5398658154_d7d37f05c6.jpg

5398658900_6640531159.jpg

Then painted the rear VW badge black with a texture, removed the black rubber bit behind it and touched up the little black holes with white...

5398657606_4dffab884d.jpg

(oh and you can see from the above picture de wipered it) But haven't got a rubber grommet for it yet

And finally fitted the numberplate bulbs:

Old (only one worked anyway):

5398686622_ba000bfa2e.jpg

5398657028_4d355b9d40.jpg

Got on the phone to Venom Motorsport this morning about the springs and the woman kindly informed me that they were ordered in from FK in germany and arrived yesterday. Should be with me monday morning! Which means lowering will have to wait til' next weekend :(

  • Author
