There needs to be a strike protest or somthing, the uni students have had there time and college people with their ema

But when is the regular person gonna get a say (who actually puts more contribution to this country then any student)

or are we all just gonna sit back and let them take money out our pokets, we pay stupid road tax, then they want to tax us even more on fuel, they make it as hard as they can for us younger drivers to get insured, then they promise us all there is no war on the car driver..could of fooled me. And if some sort of action isint taken we must all be insane.

I can't even begin to comment on what is wrong with pretty much everything you have just said. I highly recommend you join these students who don't contribute anything and get an eduction. This may help you stop talking out of your arse.

Students are the future brains of this country so to say they give nothing is ridiculous.

Maybe you should try it sometime, might help with your spelling.

You do realise these students eventually graduate and get jobs right?

That the government gets interest on the student loans they have to pay back?

That the average uni graduate earns ~£100k more than a non graduate over their lifetime, which will go through the same income tax systems, at 20%+

I'm sure some would argue that they actually pay back more to society...

They also have to pay the same prices for fuel, same road tax prices, same driving test.

Aside from the students not paying back their way (ps, you're wrong), the petrol prices are getting silly high now..

I think once it goes about 1.40 around major parts of the country, there'll be a strike. People are happy paying it just now clearly. Once it gets too much, there will be a strike.

I think people are mis-reading the original post. He is complaining about fuel duty not students. He is just using students as an example of a group of people who felt oppressed by the government and actually went out and did something about it. Which is a fair comment I think.

However, the irony is that I (assume!) he isn't actually going and organising any fuel protests himself and so is a part of what he is ranting about!

This is true, if you've got an issue with something go and sort it out, or atleast try and sort it out as opposed to waiting for someone else to do it for you!

I think he was just asking peoples opinions on the fuel prices, and relating it to students because they did protest about rising fees and no one seems to be doing anything about the ridiculous fuel prices! (not saying protesting would work , although it has in the past?)

if a lot of forums like this can get together to "do something" about the fuel prices I'm sure there is enough people who are intrested in their cars and frustrated at the prices they are having to pay at the pumps now, maybe he dosent want to organise something on such a large scale but if forums were to join together or even just normal motorists I'm sure many people would be willing to take part? i for one would take part although not having my license yet i know that the fuel prices arnt the only problem but the way insurance companies are trying to keep me off the road! they want my yearly wage (as a student not being able to work an awful lot but they want the best part of around 75-85% of my wages for insurance :/

'the regular person' had his chance, I'm not sure if you missed it or something, but there was a general election not so long ago, and between students (who thought that the Lib Dems actually had a chance), idiots (who thought the Conservatives had changed), and lazy armchair/keyboard warriors (who were too busy playing cod or wanking off to x-factor) we ended up with this complete abortion of a 'co-op' government and their complete toilet of a chancellor.

Trouble is, parties are so desperate to get elected that they spew complete and utter lies to the public, voting is a game of close your eyes and point because you never know what the parties are actually going to do until they have power! This is the reason I refuse to vote, if I was going to pick from policies that "seemed" good, I would have voted for David Cameron. I'm now glad I can at least say I had no part in this!

i voted tory and if there was an election tomorrow i would do it again. If you think its bad now imagine if 'borrow our way out of debt' labour had managed to hang on to power...

I want to pour some oil on this little fire.

Current price for standard unleaded petrol (as of 02/02/2011) is £1.29p per litre;

• There are 4.54 litres in a gallon, and its £1.29p a litre; so: £1.29p x 4.54 = £5.85 per gallon.
• Currently, £1 is $1.61. Lets convert that; £5.85 x 1.61 = $9.41.
• To summarise the above; It costs $9.41 for one gallon of unleaded petrol. (4.5litres)
• Now, in America.. For that same gallon of unleaded petrol, it costs around $3.
• $9.41 - $3 = $6.41 extra that we're paying.

Now its not the petrol companies that are ripping us off either :)

Everyone here realises that the country is in an economic turmoil right? This is what baffles me with the general opinion that we need to reduce taxes and the current government is rubbish.

The only way to rescue the current economic crisis is to put back into the economy. I.e. Spending money, paying taxes. The more we spend, the more taxes we pay, the higher the taxes the more money is pumped back into the economy which in turn helps economic growth which then makes us as a society and nation wealthy, not I 'have a massive mortgage and financed car and credit card holiday wealthy'. I mean true wealth, living by your own accord and income.

He's right, labour borrowed loads of money, promoted a 'healthy borrowing' stance, pushed business and banks into lending the general public and looked where it's got us? People blame the banks for lending too much money out, but it was the government who pushed them to do it. We are as a society in deep economic shit and only we are to blame. The current government are just picking up the pieces from the poor financial choices that the previous decided upon. When will society learn that it was a part of a problem and we need to pay for out mistakes, not just point the finger and blame everyone else for being poor, we made the financial choices, not just the government or banks.

But I digress, unfortunately the majority of households drive, I think statistically most have 2 cars. Now you do the numbers, most people need a car if not they'll still need transport which needs taxable fuel to use; it's not hard to see it's an easy opportunity for a tax hike which people will keep on paying regardless. it's just business. Don't like it? Tough. You as a part of society are to blame for the shit we are in, me included. Until we learn to live by our means it'll only get worse.

To the OP: For the record, students have the highest disposable income for the under 35 year olds. This means they spend the most on random things. Shopping in general; In case you didn't realise, the money the borrowed is spent in shops which is taxable, the shops become more wealthy as a result, local area's become more wealthy due to the amount of expendable income in the area, this in turn promotes economic growth. Not to mention that the money borrowed is paid back, with interest and that students statistically earn more than non educated members of society meaning they pay more tax in their lifetime. Some could argue that students are necessary and a major aspect for economic growth.

@MrP. - Very well said! Although i agree with everything you say and that you are pretty much just laying the unpleasant facts down. I still slightly disagree with the fact fuel has to take the biggest blow. Increasing everything by a little is surely healthy to the economy then hiking certain things by a lot?

Also, that last part about the Students made me laugh, reminded me of that track done by Mike Skinner from the Streets. Can't remember the track name though!
