@MrP. - Very well said! Although i agree with everything you say and that you are pretty much just laying the unpleasant facts down. I still slightly disagree with the fact fuel has to take the biggest blow. Increasing everything by a little is surely healthy to the economy then hiking certain things by a lot?

Also, that last part about the Students made me laugh, reminded me of that track done by Mike Skinner from the Streets. Can't remember the track name though!

Well, fuel isn't the only thing that goes up, BUT.. it's the best to use.. Fuel tax goes up, logistic prices go up, food goes up, cloths go up, holidays go up, life costs in general goes up. Petrol prices affect everything, if everything goes up as a result we end up paying more tax on everything else.

Public sector jobs have been cut massively also, this is a cut on government expenses. Tax brackets are due to change, most people will be affected by a £200 deficit this year, that's a lot of money in the grand scheme of things. its not juts petrol that's gone up, it's just a part of a much bigger picture.

Just look at the process of getting petrol to the pumps: dig it up, transport it, refine it, transport some more, refine some more, transport some more, distribute it, transport it some more, get it in the pumps and sell it then compare it to the price of bottle water which is effectively dug up and bottled. i still think we are getting a good deal.

Just look at the process of getting petrol to the pumps: dig it up, transport it, refine it, transport some more, refine some more, transport some more, distribute it, transport it some more, get it in the pumps and sell it then compare it to the price of bottle water which is effectively dug up and bottled. i still think we are getting a good deal.

You realise the oil companies ONLY charge us around 35p a litre. The rest is fuel duty & VAT. (Two taxes on a single product :));

To fill my Polo GTi (50litres); it would cost me:

35p x 50 = £17.50

Currently @ £1.29p per litre: £64.50

Tax to government: £47.00

So I'm paying the government £188 per month, nevermind the tax they cut from my job, VAT, road tax, council tax, bla bla bla.. No Mr.P; this country went down the shitter the moment you started trusting your MPs.

I know the tax charges on petrol are just inconceivably stupid as are taxes on taxes (tax on money you earned, tax on money spent etc etc). But I think you took that example in the wrong context, I was just stating, even after all the ridiculous tax the government puts on petrol it's still not a bad price in comparison to other things, that example was bottled water, but a pint of larger is more expensive than petrol also.

Not once have I mentioned trust in MP's? As Benjamin Franklin famously once said 'In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes.' Until the government stops being so corrupt (and that goes for all parties) and until they stop spending stupid money on unnecessary things we are going to get taxed the way we are, if it's not petrol it's something else which suffers. It's inevitable. Someone needs to be in power; in charge and who ever it is has a major task in front of them and one, two, three or four terms in power isn't enough to get us to where we are wanting to be as society. Everyone in this country has different opinions and as a result different parties get elected who then undo whatever policies the previous did, until the cycle gets reversed. The only way this is going to end if a dictatorship gets in and no one wants that do they?

Taxes will rise, petrol will become more expensive, governments will corrupt. you think it's bad now? Wait 20 years for the oil to really start and these dormant superpowers like China and Russia to start flexing their muscles then see what happens to our economy. My advice would be to work hard and earn enough to fuck off out of the UK as this place is only going to get poorer, not richer.

I want to pour some oil on this little fire.

Current price for standard unleaded petrol (as of 02/02/2011) is £1.29p per litre;

• There are 4.54 litres in a gallon, and its £1.29p a litre; so: £1.29p x 4.54 = £5.85 per gallon.
• Currently, £1 is $1.61. Lets convert that; £5.85 x 1.61 = $9.41.
• To summarise the above; It costs $9.41 for one gallon of unleaded petrol. (4.5litres)
• Now, in America.. For that same gallon of unleaded petrol, it costs around $3.
• $9.41 - $3 = $6.41 extra that we're paying.

Now its not the petrol companies that are ripping us off either :)

Erm.....A UK gallon is 4.54L, yes. An American gallon is 3.79 - so your original comparison calculation is an unfair comparison. :p
