Rough mk1 Golf GTI

Featured Replies

Hi, basically I've been looking for a project car recently, I do bar work in the evenings and get sooooo bored during the day! I've been round some local areas a' knocking recently (lots of derelict Vws in my area, theres 2 unused breadys, a B4 passat estate, scirocco mk2 all within 5 minutes!!) I was out walking my dog the other day, when VERY locally I started speaking to an elely gentleman who was cutting back some wasteground type area behind his house. And guess what was hiding in the bushes? A mars red mk1 Golf Gti, I climbed through the bushes for a look it seems in okish nick for something thats been standing for so long, there wasnt to much rust and no bodywork damage. The interiour is pretty much shot form weather/vandalism, and the engine didnt look like its fared well. The cars completely standard however and had a pile of parts next to it, including a couple of alloys (didnt really get a close look at this lot) the guy said it had been standing for about 6 years.

He seemed pretty keen to sell it, said I was welcome to knock at his house any time to discuss making an offer for it. I'm very skint at the moment, havnt got the money to restore her even if I wanted too, but am considering buying it, giving it a good scrub up and having a tinker and doing as much work as I can on it, before selling it on to someone who has the time and money to restore her (its definatly in restorable condition) I mainly want to buy it to save it from deterioation!

Ill include a picture, how much do you guys recon its worth?

i was looking at a mk1 golf gti a little while back that was just left on someone drive and it looked remarkably like that one.

i was just gonna offer them a few hundered but the car was gone when i finally plucked up the courage to knock on the door

Offer him scrap value and then go from there?

Start a £150, he might like the car alot so bang on about retoring it - Don't get him you gonna paint it brown and lower it to the floor

from my experiance, what a deralicit vw is worth and what the owner would let it go for are two vastly different things

just offer him 200 and take it from there, you might get lucky.

then again if the old dude is part of the scene then he probably will want about £1k

that aint even 'scene' prices. if its solid and dont need any bodywork it'd be well worth that

Thats the sad thing about it though i guess.

Everyone I asked has said you would have to be rather stupid to be spending more than even £500 on something as old as a mk1. Regardless of what it is, it's still a 30 odd year old tin can. (Or an upside down skip as my dad thinks lol)

Its one of the best hot hatches ever made, still in vogue and will be for the foreseeable future, loved by thousands, there are probably hundreds of people who want one,and if its all original i wouldn't even consider a three figure sum.

Put it on ebay, spread the link around a few forums,it'll do well.

Got to be worth about £300 at least?

See how much HE wants for it, at the end of the day you could be shooting yourself in the foot by offering a couple of hundred when he might only want £100.

Got to be worth about £300 at least?

it'd fetch that much if every panel had a hole in it, never mind it being solid

when i get to a lap top later i'll post a photo up of the mk1 gti campaign i bought a couple of years ago for 150. Same story, it had been parked up for a couple of years and he just wanted rid, if i hadn't got there he was going to scrap it.

There are still bargains about and for all any one knows this could be one of them. Get back round there and do some digging to try and get an idea of what he would let it go for

yea the guy might want next to nowt for it. but selling it in the right place will easy make good cash

Wicked cheers for the response guys! I'm going to wait at least until I have some money up front before making an offer to him! then hopefully there will be a build thread coming up soon ;)

I've been looking at them for a while now, even sheds that are rotted to hell go for atleast £500 and the 'barn find' as people put go for around £700+ but start off on £100 and work up in £50's?? He will have a mint saved in a pension somewhere so he wont need ££££'s lol
