i got my first car when i was 16 ready for me passing when i was 17, its was a Polo 6N2 1.0, as you will know they're not the quickest of things. i kept that until i got 1 years ncb then wanted a Saxo VTR as my mates had one and they were quicker. I'm now looking for my 3rd car and coming back to the polo scene and saxo's are fucking shite. yes they're quite good fun but everything goes wrong with it, i had no problems with my Polo and i am gutted i got rid, i even tried swapping the lad who bought it for my VTR.

I got banned from Cliosport for doing some similar driving round Jct 31 of the M62 in Cas, and also the only car i've ever been congratulated on my driving with by a traffic cop, after I came flying round the Burger King roundabout near the Cineworld with the inside rear a foot off the floor then perfectly handbraked into the car park and into a parking space haha

Driven and owned a Renault Clio mk1 was an ok car bit more refined than 106s n saxos I've driven (non top spec) but the best fence car I've driven is my gfs 206cc it feels like it indestructible and there's no rattles creeks as with previous French cars I've driven (my polo also has little charming rattles etc) all you can hear is the 120bhp powerplant roarring haha not particularly inspiring to drive mind! Don't really care were a cars from but I must say When I think about it mostly dislike vauxhalls and French motors!

I was smashed at the time, but wow. It seemed to pull like a train, but that could have been down to my drunken state. Who knows...

I'd love a VTR or a 205/106 gti to idiot about in. They might be made of cheese, but every time I've had a go in a VTR I've struggled not to smile.

HEE HEE as a member of the punto forum aswell there has always been much teasing between the french (VTR ,VTS brigade etc) and us and trying to claim who is better and to be honest as I've owned a 205 gti and R5 in the past they are just as bad as each other for build quality but for pure excitement the 205 is up there ,yes if you dared to cough any where near the body work it crumpled and both the french and the italian built cars are like driving around in a quality street tin .

In my experience VWs are built better and so more reliable at times but the Punt always puts a smile on my face when i take her out every now and then.

I've owned a phase 1 106 rallye and a 306 gti-6 which were both amazing to be honest... French cars are fun, enthusiastic little engines in cars made of tin foil...what more could you want?

I'm in the "don't judge a car purely by its nationality" camp. My dad for example, has a 2003 Laguna. He's kicked the shit out of it for 76000 miles and so far the only thing that's gone wrong is the ECU messing up the fuelling. Took 5 minutes for the dealer to sort with a computer. Quite a few cars on my "one day" list are French.

By contrast, my friend had a B5 Passat, spent more time in the dealership than on the road, had major probs with suspension, clutch, gearbox, and he eventually ended up selling it. He got another one with just over 100k on the clock, suffered total ECU failure after 3 days under his ownership. He scrapped it and bought a Saab!

The amount of french cars i see with things wrong with them is huge... I mean just tonight leaving Rugby i saw a Picasso with its break lights stuck on (unless the guy was accelerating and braking at the same time...hmmm don't think so), he pulls off and then there's a 307 or something with exactly the same thing! Then there was a Megane with one working rear light, and one working brake light. Then there's watching them driving around town, creaky suspension, squeaky bearings etc. I never see this many non-french cars (not to say that it doesn't happen at all on others...it does) with problems like those, they hardly have any.

Having said that, i've driven a Clio Sport 182 and that was bare fun! Proper nippy little fucker

I guess it's just the more 'budget' end cars they do are the ones that fail a lot. For that reason i hate french cars! they just do ma nut in!

I don't really care what country a car is built in. In my experience, VW's aren't all that well built, and mine was a German built one.

However, I wouldn't buy a GTi-6, my mate has got one, so many things have broken on it. One of the rear springs snapped, steering rack went, heater blows on full power constantly, the interior is shit. And it's not that fast really, handles well though.

The few french cars I would own myself are the same as other people really, 205 GTi, 106 GTi, VTR/VTS, R5 Turbo, clio 172/182, clio williams. And I wouldn't own any of them cos they are built well, just because they are all supposed to be amazing to drive.

Another of my mates has a MK1 VTR, really quick little, well handling car and its completely standard. Build quality lets it down though.

Sorry to hear that as mine (touch wood ) has been ok so far and the shell isn't rusty like a lot i see on the forum but then again i do spend a large part of my time fettling with it more so than the VW

My dads a cop, I used to know most of the traffic guys fairly well. I dunno why but I tend to get out of situations like that easily, done a lot of silly things in the past (running from the police etc) and still not had any points on my licence in the 8 years i've been driving. I've slowed down a lot now, though still have a play now and then though always when i'm alone in the car. Don't think i've ever gone anywhere near 100% as fast as I can go with a passenger, and now i've got a daughter to bring up I drive pretty much like a granny.

... Vw's love rust just as much as any ford or pug of the same era. Mk1 golfs and scirocco's are just as bad for rotting to the point of no return as mk3 golfs, 6n polos ect, and don't even get me started on the beetle ...

In all honesty I've not had any rust problems with my 306. They tend to do fairly well in the rust stakes due to the paint-primer process they undergo. I've known a few to rust on the passenger side rear seat belt bracket because for some reason they failed to put an arch liner on that side?!

i've only had bad experiences with electrics on my old pug, pretty much everything went on it.

Oh yes, French electrics are the worst ever! The list of "common faults" on Pugs tends to be 90+% electrics!

I own a 306, have done for years and really like it. Yes they are full of electrical problems, but they do tend to be fairly solidly built cars. Oh, and I do spend a lot of my time on Pug306 forums as well, so slightly biased I guess. As I say, they aren't perfect but for the price of them I think they are fairly good value for money. As others have said, I think hating cars purely on where they come from is an odd thing to do! Although it is true, different countries do end up with reputations, no matter whether they are French, German, Italian etc.

At the end of the day we could all own Fix Or Repair Daily's...
